UNFORTUNATELY, THIS BOX HAS DISAPPEARED AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE
This is in honor of Walt Whitman, who used to hike the woods this letterbox is hidden in
Take West Hills Road to Resevoir Road and go all the way to the end. Park on the side of the road. Find the gravel path opposite the Ranger Station. A sign says "South Huntington Water District" but you ARE allowed up this path.
Go past the water tower and you will find yourself at the top of Jayne's Hill, the highest point on Long Island. Take a look at the verse from Whitman on the big boulder. After reading the verse, turn right. You'll see a trail heading off into the woods. Follow that trail.
You'll notice white blazes on the trees. This is the trail you want to stay on. You'll go past a couple of forks, but stay on the white blazed trail. After walking for about 5 minutes or so, you'll notice the trail curves to the right.
At that point, you'll see the # 13 on your right and a white blaze on the tree in front of you. Opposite the 13 is a fallen log.
Look behind that log to find the prize.
After stamping in, continue on the white blazed trail. You'll come to a clearing. Follow the path in the clearing around and to the right and it will bring you back to where you parked.
There are many nice trails throughout this park. Come back and try them out someday, and good luck!
(NOTE: I will be removing the ink pad from this box for the winter, so please bring your own ink. Thanks)
