The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Oklahoma is the oldest managed wildlife preserve in the United States. Thanks to Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, over 59,000 acres of gorgeous grassland and mountaintops have been set aside for the enjoyment and propagation of many endangered species of game. Within about 2 miles one afternoon, we saw deer, longhorn, bison and elk. The next day we saw wild turkeys in the same spot. This park is truly one of America’s treasures.

The Visitor Center is at the junction of State Highways 115 and 49, about 20 miles northwest of Lawton. Hours of operation are 10am to 5:30pm, closed Tuesdays and major holidays. Enjoy the museum and pick up a trail map there.

TO THE BOX
Take Highway 49 northwest to the Lost Lake picnic area. Park in the cul-de-sac at the end of the road and follow the Kite Trail roughly along the lake. About 50 feet after the dam, the trail will split. The left fork goes uphill to a sign for the 40 Foot Hole. Take the right fork downhill and cross the creek. (This is easier than it initially seems - Promise! Just aim for the big sign on the opposite bank.) Join the Bison Trail and head right. Stop at the point on the trail where you’re standing directly in line with the main part of the dam. You should be standing in front of a group of juniper and oak. The largest juniper is hollow and the box is inside, about 2-3 feet from the ground, underneath some wood peices.

We always return by walking across the dam. If you're a clutz, stay to the left so you'll fall into the water! When you get back to the car, be sure to check for hitchhikers (not the LBing kind!) -- Ron found a tick on his arm after we planted this one!
