THIS SERIES WAS RETIRED 08/15/07. It may be replanted at some point in a new location...

The Tom Sawyer Island Series consists of four separate images found at four separate locations. When the stamps are assembled, they make a large image of Tom Sawyer Island, an attraction found at Disneyland in California and at Walt Disney World in Florida.

BOX ONE: HARPER'S MILL
Placed in honor of National Day of Letterbox Planting on May 24, 2006! Find the Park in Louisville named after Erbon Powers Sawyer. Enter the main entrance from Freys Hill Road. Follow the signs to the Fitness Trail. Enjoy a walk along the trail, continuing around in a counterclockwise loop. At one point, the trail will cross a road, but continue on the gravel trail. Eventually you will see a set of lonely swings on your left. Shortly after, you'll see a picnic area bordered by large logs. Leave the trail, and follow along the logs until they end. Take a reading of 40 degrees and walk in that direction to the nearest tree. The letterbox is tucked up inside the base of the tree. The park may be busy on the weekends; please be discreet and rehide carefully. If you continue on the gravel fitness trail, you'll eventually come back to the parking lot.

Harper's Mill is one of the most prominent features of Tom Sawyer Island. According to Tom Sawyer hisself, "This here deserted grist mill wuz named after my frien Joe Harper's Old Man. If'n you choose to go inside please don't scare the birds what you will find there unless some no good done scared them before you did."

BOX THREE: THE MINE
There is another entrance to Tom Sawyer Park off N Hurstbourne Parkway. The sign is very small and easily missed. Begin in this smaller parking lot. Go to the sign that reads "Dogs Must Be on a Leash" located next to a lone pine tree. Then walk toward the sign that for the Goose Creek Trail. When you get to the sign, do not go on the trail, but instead turn right and walk in the grass along the treeline for 42 paces (1 pace=2 steps). You will be near the road and the entrance gate. You should see a creek bed and drain pipe. From the drain pipe, take a reading of 200 degrees and walk 8 steps toward a tree. A large rock at the base of the tree hides Box Three.

The Mine at Tom Sawyer Island at the Magic Kingdom is called the Magnetic Mystery Mine.

BOX FOUR: THE BRIDGE
Directly across N Hurstbourne Parkway is another park, Houns Lane Park. Park anywhere in the parking lot, then take the sidewalk toward the picnic shelter. The sidewalk will curve to the left, and you'll cross a bridge. After crossing the bridge, take a reading of 250 degrees, and walk toward a small hill for about 24 paces. There is an uprooted tree lying on the hill in a north/south direction. To the right of the uprooted tree (about one yard) is a log. The letterbox is underneath a yellowish stone next to the log. Please rehide this one carefully, so that the bag is completely covered by the rock and log.

BOX TWO: THE FORT
After finding The Bridge letterbox, return to the footbridge, but do not cross it. You'll see a small path that winds along the creek. Follow the path upstream(?), taking the high road when the path splits. Soon after the path rejoins, you'll notice a 10-foot stump with a hole right in the middle of it to your left. The letterbox is hidden in the stump, covered by a piece of bark.

The Fort at Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland is named Fort Wilderness. The Fort at TSI at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World is named Fort Langhorn (formerly Fort Sam Clemens).
