Wonder Bread.

Location: Great Seal State Park.
Difficulty: This climb will be one of the most difficult you will encounter in Ohio due to the steepness of the climb to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.
Not handicap accessible.
Distance: About 1 ½ trail miles one way if map legends are accurate.

If you ate your Wonder bread as a young-un, you've got the strong bones for this trip. Located near the top so as to represent the jouney I've made so far and the distance left to travel.

You will park at the Ireland picnic shelter and find the trail head up the hill to the top of Sugarloaf mountain on past the disk golf course and a couple other boxes on this upward trail.

This trail meanders around away from the hill for awhile before turning left after hole 4 and on past holes 5 of the golf baskets. Do not be confused by the messy tangle of trails that cross the early stages of your epic journey. Some of the trails seem to be used by horses as well as us adventurous heroes.

You will follow this trail as it wanders around on up to a sign that says ‘Park trail Ends”.

Follow the yellow trail that leads to the left on up the very steep hillside on past my ‘Walk a Mile_____.” box all the way up to the tippy-top of Sugarloaf mountain.

Once near the top, you will see some grass and weeds sprouting along the way, I passed a mountain biker near the bottom and I met him again on the top as he came around the trail and came up from the other side of the hill.

On top of the hill, there will be a well rotted log near the path that faces North to South, this will be one of many places you will stop to rest…unless you are a he-man like me….(Pause for effect)…

I first came up here before the leaves were out when I could see my truck parked in the lot way below and I just went over the hill straight to it and cut off ¾ of the hike.

While sitting on the South end of the log (the stump end), you can see parts of Chillicothe through the trees . Your car will be a little more to the left of the view down below.

Continue on the trail as it starts over the hill to a point where you will be between a leaning maple with a blaze on it (right side) and a twin trunk Oak with a cavity on down-trail side (left).

From the Oak, 23 paces at 290* will bring you to Wonder Bread located in the depression left by an uprooted tree. The tree will be to the right of another similar uprooted log.

Box is under a flat rock that sits on a circle of small rocks. You might want to poke the thing over with a stick Atlas-style before exposing soft, pink fingers to critters that may come to reside under it. I found some nice fossils in a rock up there.

You can head back the way you came, sneak down the hill, or continue onward until your socks end up in the toe of your shoes on the steep down trail. Luckily, I had one of my $2.93 Salvation Army store ski poles with me to keep me from snow-balling all the way home.

This trail will eventually lead down and around to the left to the horseman’s camp and on to the trail you went up.
