NOTICE: Notified in Jan. 2008 that this box is MIA. So sorry! I hope someone who is going to this park places new letterboxes. The groundskeeper did want to get rid of it, but management let it stay. Earlier reports of damage and now it is missing.

Chippokes Plantation State Park

Information about the park

Chippokes is across the James River from Jamestown. It is one of the oldest working plantation (since 1619) to still be in use. There is a Vistor Center with a small store, picnic area with grills that overlook the river, a pre-Civil War Mansion home with other support buildings (e.g., kitchen), and you can even stay in small old homes on the plantation. There is a lovely formal garden near the mansion.

There are bicycle trails, swimming, campground, horse trail and hiking trails. There are restrooms, shower, and a telephone. It is handicapped accessible.

There is a $3.00 parking fee, unless you are staying at the plantation.

You can take the car ferry (free) from Jamestown and following the road to Surry. The ferry runs every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour. The ferry can be alittle cold...bring a jacket!

From the ferry, you are on Rt. 31. Continue into the town of Surry. Turn left at the blinking light, which is route 10 and then turn left at Route 364 (signs are well mark, follow the signs to park), continue for about 4 miles, where the park entrance is on the left.

THIS IS A VERY EASY -- VERY SHORT HIKE...SHOULD FIND IT IN MINUTES!

CLUES FOR FUN IN THE SUN

Start at the Mansion parking lot. When you face the mansion, if you have a compass head north (in the direction of the river). As you leave the parking lot, you need to walk through a little bush area to get to the trail that is in the north direction. There are a path of Holly trees. Continue on the path, passing an old wide brick steps that lead to another path or truck trail (but don't go down the stairs). Continue on the path.

As the path opens up to a wider clearing, head towards two tall trees (yes there are a lot of trees in the area) but there are two large trees that are on the lower part of the hill (clearing). Walk between the two trees.

At once you come across the a group of boxwoods, your Fun in the Sun begins! Once you find this letterbox, look for Wild horses.
