This letterbox is part of an ongoing series, Whispers of the Past. I have always been fascinated with cemetaries. From discovering your personal history, to getting a glimpse of life in a bygone era, a short stroll through the peacefullness and tranquility of a cemetary can be not only educational, but theraputic as well. This series visits several cemetaries that are steeped in history and culture. Gravestones are works of art, and nature is in full abundance.
Please note that although they are located in cemetaries, these boxes are NOT located on or around graves. I would ask that you respect the families who have loved ones in these cemetaries by taking time to just enjoy the peace of these locations.
There is NO stamp pad or pencils in this box, so you'll need to bring your own.
Cemetary hours are from 8am to dusk. PLEASE be aware that the gates are on a light-sensitive timer, and will close and lock by themselves when it begins to get dark. This is the ONLY entrance/exit to the cemetary, so you'll need to plan accordingly if you don't want to spend the night ;)
Directions to Holy Spirit Cemetary
From 81, take exit 6 to Rt. 12 North.
Continue along Rt. 12 past the businesses and restaurants. You will go through several traffic lights. When you get to the one by the Hess Gas Station on the right, continue on straight.
Drive exactly 2 miles on Rt. 12 once you pass that final traffic light. Holy Spirit Cemetary will be on your right.
Directions to letterbox:
1. Drive through the gates, and around behind the large crucifix in the center of the cemetary. It's really large - you can't miss it.
2. Continue driving back towards the tree line. You can park your car anywhere along the road at this point. Not on the grass, please.
3. Walk across the grassy area towards the tree line. You'll see a pond to your left. Walk along the edge of the bank towards the pond.
4. Continue to walk around the pond until you come to a cement landing with an iron gate across it. Stop at the edge of the landing closest to you. To your right you should see some rusty chain link fencing, so BE CAREFUL!!!
5. Under the right corner of the cement landing, next to the fence and underneath some rocks, you'll find Whispers of the Past.
