This letterbox is part of an ongoing series, Whispers of the Past. I have always been fascinated with cemetaries. From discovering your personal history, to getting a glimpse of life in a bygone era, a short stroll through the peacefullness and tranquility of a cemetary can be not only educational, but theraputic as well. This series visits several cemetaries that are steeped in history and culture. Gravestones are works of art, and nature is in full abundance.

Please note that although they are located in cemetaries, these boxes are NOT located on or around graves. I would ask that you respect the families who have loved ones in these cemetaries by taking time to just enjoy the peace of these locations.

There is NO stamp pad or pencils in this box, so you'll need to bring your own.

This letterbox was a true adventure to plant ... since I scouted out the location last fall, the cemetary has cleared the entire top of the mountain for expansion. I had to do some scrambling for a new location, but I like it better than where I was originally going to hide it! There's an abundance of wildlife on this hill, including a big old doe that hopped out right in front of us as we were walking to the location. Depending on the time of your visit, you also may encounter large construction equipment and/or construction workers. I'd suggest abandoning your search for the time being if this is the case ...

Directions to Vestal Hills Memorial Park:
From 17 take exit 60. Follow the signs to Vestal
Continue across the bridges until you see the "Old Vestal Road" exit ramp. Take this ramp
At the bottom of the ramp, take a right onto Old Vestal Road.
Drive a short distance, and you will see the Memorial Park on your right. Drive PAST the first gate, and turn right at the second gate.

Directions to Letterbox
1. Drive straight up past the double ponds (stop and feed the ducks if you have time and some spare cracked corn with you) until you reach a T in the road.
2. Turn left at the T
3. Continue to bear left and drive uphill. Keep an eye out for a marble tome on your left ... this means you're on the right track!!!
4. Continue driving up the hill, following the path until you can't get any higher. If you see the eagle poised for flight, you're getting closer! Drive around and park behind the big black mausoleum.
5. As you stand facing away from the mausoleum, you will see an old chain link/barb wire fence. Walk towards this fence, and you will see a well-travelled dirt path. Walk along this path.
6. Abandon the path when it continues straight away from the fence, and follow the fence until you get to a small grassy area going in two directions. Start walking left down the hill.
7. As you're walking, keep track of the electrical poles that you're passing Somewhere between the 3rd and 4th poles, there is an opening into the woods, on your right.
8. Standing at that opening, take 21 steps into the woods along another path. Stop.
9. Take another 7 steps directly to your right. At the base of the big tree, covered with bark, stones, and leaves, is Whispers of the Past.

Please rehide carefully, and DO NOT go towards the NYSEG station you'll see ahead of you on the path. There are "posted no trespassing" signs as you get closer to the station, but the location of the letterbox is still on cemetary property and you shouldn't have problems.
