missing - 6/12/06 - May recarve and replace, but there aren't many good places on the plaza and this one only lasted a month.

This is the second in our fountain series and is located at the Country Club Plaza, which has the greatest concentration of fountains anywhere in the city. We thought we would pick out a nice walk through the Plaza that passes a few of them.

You must start at the most famous fountain in Kansas City, the JC Nichols fountain. Located on the corner of E. 47th St. and JC Nichols Parkway, this fountain was dedicated in 1960 and the four horsemen are said to represent four great rivers of the world, the Siene, Rhine, Volga, and Mississippi.

Then cross JC Nichols Parkway and head west on 47th St., you will pass by the Seville Light Fountain, which is 30 ft. high and has water running out of four masked faces on each side of the central shaft.

As you walk down 47th, look across the street, in the courtyard of the Cheesecake Factory is the Fountain of Bacchus erected in 1969. Continue on and you will cross over Wyandotte and Wornall Rd. On the corner of Wornall and 47th is the Neptune fountain, erected in 1953, this fountain was bought literally off the scrap heap. It was found on a train car full of scrap metal.

After enjoying the god Neptune, cross 47th St. and walk one block down Central St. to Nichols Rd. Take a right onto Nichols and if you stay on the north side you will pass by two small fountains, Boy and Frog erected in 1929 after being purchased in Florence, Italy, and Four Fauns Fountain erected in 1928 in a nice quiet nook off the busy plaza streets.

After on block you will come to the corner of Nichols and Broadway (or Wornall, it changes names right about here and I'm not sure what the sign says). Take a left onto Broadway (or Wornall) and stay on the west side of the street. You will pass the Mermaid Fountain, which was built in 1930, but the two marble mermaids date back more than 300 years. At the end of the block you will see the Pamona Fountain, erected in 1969 and purchased in Italy.

At this point, cross Ward Parkway and to your left will be some steps that go down to Brush Creek. Off to your left is one of the 3 fountains that are in Brush Creek. Go down to the creek and turn right and walk along the sidewalk. As you walk you will see some waterfalls off in the distance, continue until you just about reach them (just before the path goes back up to street level). You will see some large rocks on the left of the sidewalk. On the back side of the last large rock (it sticks up higher than the rest and is flat on top), there is some evergreen ground cover and a small crevace in the rock close to the ground. You'll know you're there if you look into the creek and there is a little boat type ramp going into the water. In the crevace is the microbox (its an old Altoids box, so you'll know the size).

When you've got it there are some benches to sit on to do your work. The Plaza is extremely busy (although this is a quieter spot), so be as careful as you can when you replace it. If you parked over by JC Nichols fountain try walking back a different way, you'll see a whole bunch more fountains.

Oh yeah, there is also some shopping on the Plaza if you're interested in that. Have fun!
