This letterbox is part of an ongoing series, Whispers of the Past. I have always been fascinated with cemetaries. From discovering your personal history, to getting a glimpse of life in a bygone era, a short stroll through the peacefullness and tranquility of a cemetary can be not only educational, but theraputic as well. This series visits several cemetaries that are steeped in history and culture. Gravestones are works of art, and nature is in full abundance.

Please note that although they are located in cemetaries, these boxes are NOT located on or around graves. I would ask that you respect the families who have loved ones in these cemetaries by taking time to just enjoy the peace of these locations.

There is NO stamp pad or pencils in this box, so you'll need to bring your own.

Directions to Evergreen Cemetary
Take NY Rt. 17 to the Owego exit. At the end of the ramp turn right on Rt. 17C. Continue through the next light, and turn right onto John Street at the following light. At the end of John Street, cross the tracks and take a left onto Erie Street. Drive along Erie, then take a right onto Green Hill. At the end of Green Hill, turn left onto Prospect St. Continue along Prospect until you come to the stop sign. You will see the white gates leading to Evergreen Cemetary straight ahead. Cemetary hours are 7am to dark, so plan accordingly - they do lock the gates at night. The roads are VERY steep and full of turns and windings, so please use care when driving around.

Directions to Whispers of the Past - Evergreen Letterbox
1. Go through the cemetary gates and head up the hill. Continue to bear left on the road. If you pass the white office, you're on the right track. There's also a map at the office should you need to check it.
2. Continue along the road. You should eventually see Pool Street. Go straight past Pool to a T in the road.
3. At the T, take a left. Drive past the small canons, and continue up along this road until you get to a U where the road levels off. Park your car here.
4. If you look up the hill, you will see a wide grass path along the tree line. Start walking up this path.
5. Pass the Murphy Barr on your right, and continue walking up the hill along the path.
6. The path will branch off in two directions, straight and to the right further into the woods. Stay straight.
7. Walk 25 paces straight up the path
8. Look into the woods to your left. You should see a fairly large fallen tree a short distance into the woods. Walk to the base of this tree. Underneath a flat rock and some leaves is "Whispers of the Past"

Please conceal the box carefully after stamping in, and log your find! When you return to your car, I highly suggest following the road around the top of the cemetary - there is a fantastic view of Owego and the surrounding valley on the other side of the cemetary. I discovered this cemetary by "accident" one day after work, and it's one of my favorites.
