Reed City is a place that likes to refer to itself as the "Crossroads of Michigan". And to some extent, it is, as it is where US-10 and US-131 intersect. At this intersection is the expected conglomeration of fast food restaurants and gas stations. Many people just stop here for a quick break on their way to somewhere bigger and more exciting. I thought this might be a good place to put a letterbox, for all the boxers who probably pass through this area on their travels. You may be ready for a break and need to stretch your legs. This box is not difficult, and should only take 20 minutes or so (not too long – you’ve got places to go!). It is off a wide, well maintained path that is sometimes boardwalk, sometime gravel. The gravel parts would probably not be wheelchair or stroller accessible, although that could be debated.

The “Little Mac” Bridge is a miniature version of THE Mackinac Bridge. However, Little Mac goes over the Hersey River, which is no match for the Straits. But it is part of a great trail, and is really pretty all lit up in the winter! I would suggest that you bring a partner, or a Frisbee, or a pet with you to provide the necessary ‘cover’ as you search for the box, as this can be a busy area at times!

Note: There is another box in this area - “The Old Rugged Cross”. If you went to that box, you can just pick up the clues from there and continue on to “Little Mac”. Otherwise, here are the directions to Rambadt Park.

DIRECTIONS:

From US-131 take exit 153 and head toward the Golden Arches. From US-10, travel to where 10 intersects US-131 and head toward the Golden Arches. Turn left on Park Street and drive until the road turns. You will pass the Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum (the beginning point to that LB). Continue on Park Street, where it will curve to the left. Shortly after this curve, you will see the entrance to Rambadt Park on the left side of the road.

CLUES:

From the parking lot, head toward the horseshoe pits. You will see a sign to the right pointing the way to the “Little Mac Bridge”. Go that way!

Down the Boardwalk you go, staying on the main path.

Hello, Operator!

Cross over Little Mac – don’t be scared if it’s a little wobbly – it makes it more fun!

Continue along the trail. Before long, you will pass a flag pole on your left followed by a small gazebo. From the center of this gazebo, take a bearing of 140 degrees and spot that which has been ‘Earnest’ly dedicated to Ms. Metz about 30 paces away. Go to this place! (This is where that partner, pet, or frisbee may come in handy!)

Side note: There is a nice, flat rock on the west side of the tree – perfect for sitting and pretending to write in a journal (which is what I did while placing this box!). It is actually quite comfy! Anyway…

Look on the side of Ms. Metz’ tree, opposite the gazebo, between the eastern-most pointing arm and a pile of logs. There you will find your prize!

Please rehide well, as this is a busy area.

From here, retrace your steps back to your car, or continue on the trail for a nice hike!
