Reed City is a place that likes to refer to itself as the "Crossroads of Michigan". And to some extent, it is, as it is where US-10 and US-131 intersect. At this intersection is the expected conglomeration of fast food restaurants and gas stations. Many people just stop here for a quick break on their way to somewhere bigger and more exciting. I thought this might be a good place to put a letterbox, for all the boxers who probably pass through this area on their travels. You may be ready for a break and need to stretch your legs. This box is not difficult, and should only take 15-20 minutes (not too long – you’ve got places to go!). It is off a wide, well maintained path through some woods. There is one small hill, and it would not be wheelchair or stroller accessible.

DIRECTIONS:
From US-131 take exit 153 and head toward the Golden Arches. From US-10 go to Reed City where it intersects with US-131 and head to the Golden Arches. Turn left on Park Street and drive until the road turns. Here you will find the Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum. Park in the main parking lot.

The Old Rugged Cross Historical Museum is an outgrowth of a memorial cross erected and dedicated on September 14, 1954, north of Reed City, Michigan, near the Home of Rev. and Mrs. George Bennard. Rev. Bennard was the author of the well-loved hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross, " written in 1913.
The museum presently contains mementos and relics not only from the Bennard home, but also from the original Osceola County Historical Museum, which was opened in downtown Reed City, Michigan on August 1, 1968. The present museum opened August 19, 1990.
The museum also houses the archives of the Reed City Area Genealogical Society. This collection includes microfilms of old Reed City Area newspapers and Osceola County census records, obituaries, plat books, family files and old pictures. These resources are available to the public during regular museum hours and by appointment.
HOURS:
May 1 - September 30, Daily, 1 - 4 PM ; Phone: (231)832-5431; Admission: FREE
CLUES:
From the parking lot, follow the path that heads off from the rear of the museum building. Head down the hill and shortly you will reach a pair of benches. 10-12 paces past these benches, look just off the trail to your right to see a ‘pregnant’ tree. Standing on the non-trail side of this tree, take a bearing of 165 degrees. You will spot a natural ‘old rugged cross’ off in the distance about 10 feet off the ground. (Please note that this may be difficult to see once the leaves are all in – so have faith!) and go 18-20 paces at your bearing. Once you have found your mark, look on the ground on the SW side of this ‘cross’ to find yet another intersection, this one on the ground. Underneath where the two smaller logs cross, find your prize!

From here, you can return to your car and your journey, or continue on the trail into Rambadt Park and pick up the clues for “Little Mac”.
