We enjoy birdhouses and have begun to hang a collection of them around our yard as decorations. We have one birdhouse that hangs from a hook on our garage near the brick walkway to our deck. This birdhouse is pale turquoise and has a copper roof and a copper wire fence around the base. During the spring of 2005 we noticed a couple of chickadees that would fly back in forth between this birdhouse and the trees in our neighbor’s yard. We had a feeling that they were building a nest in our birdhouse; our suspicions would later be confirmed. . .

A few weeks passed and we had a very bad storm during the early afternoon. I got home on this particular day to discover that the birdhouse had been blown down during the storm and was lying on the brick path face down. I was horrified to discover that not only was there in fact a nest in the birdhouse, but that the birds already had eggs; these eggs had already hatched and four of the baby chickadees had fallen out of the nest as a result of the house falling off the hook. These babies were also lying on the brick path, next to their home. Three of the four babies could not be saved due to their injuries. The fourth baby looked miraculously unharmed and was still moving, wearing one of my gardening gloves, I picked it up and looked him over. I then picked up the birdhouse and opened the back hatch, I could see that there was at least 2 babies still inside the birdhouse and that they were moving, I placed their sibling with them, closed the back hatch, and re-hung the birdhouse. I ran in the backdoor and watched the birdhouse from the kitchen window. Almost immediately, Mama Bird returned. She stayed inside with her babies for a couple of hours before leaving again to find food. As soon as she left, Papa Bird took her place in the nest. When Mr. Cottontail got home from work, he got out some super strong wire and tied the birdhouse to the hook (surprisingly with no protest from our “tenants”) so that this incident would not be repeated during the next storm. We hoped and prayed that the babies would survive. Mama Bird and Papa Bird kept up their shift swapping routine for the next couple of weeks. We were so happy the day that we realized that we could hear the remaining chicks singing inside the nest, calling for their parents, and knew that they were going to survive!! We had fun watching our baby birds grow up and eventually leave their nest. From this experience, we learned that it takes about 16 days for baby chickadees to leave the nest once they’ve hatched.

In late June/July of 2005, Mama and Papa Bird were back. They re-used the nest from the spring and hatched another healthy brood of babies. We had so much fun watching them grow and learning to fly!

We became very accustomed to having our new “tenants” flying and singing around our yard. We talked all winter about whether or not to expect our new friends back this year. We cleaned out the old nest in early March and made sure the support wires were still tight in preparation of their possible return.

On April 11, 2006, when I got home from school, who was there to greet me? None other than Papa Bird! He was back and was perched on his wire fence surveying his home from last year. He was out there for about an hour making sure that things were the same. I can’t wait to see if they are re-building their nest. I was so happy to see him that I decided to carve this stamp of our little friend and his “rental property.”

Starting at the cemetery’s main gate, move to your left until you find the RULEs to start your search. After brushing up on the rules, throw your FRISBY to a nearby two-trunked tree. From here it’s a LITTLE way to Raymond, who should be watching you. You need to decide if this trip is WIRTH your time. Continue up the MEAGHER path. Be sure not to WELCH on your commitment to finding your reward. It’s not a long way to Tipperary and only a little ways MOORE to your reward. Things are looking up as you head towards Gilberts. With all this walking, we hope that you are feeling DEVINE. Turn around and enjoy the view, it’s not LONG from here, just ask HAYDEN, but don't get stumped! If HAYDEN doesn't know, you could ask KELLEY. Then check with the POWERS that be. They'll say evergreen, but be sure to pick the right one or you'll get needled.
