*** Warning- this series of boxes is not for the faint of heart, it should not to be attempted alone (bring a buddy, the climb tends to get a bit tricky), finding all of the boxes involves vertical climbing over boulders, and strenuous activity. Know your own limits, please!! Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, bring a walking stick, a flashlight (you will know why later), bug spray and water and be ready to spend at least three hours on the trail. The rocks will be slippery when wet! Wear blaze orange during hunting season.***

To find this series of boxes, you will first need to locate the second highest point in Bucks County. Turn onto Top Rock Trail (0.6 miles) and park in the state game land (#157) parking area on the left. To begin your hunt, follow the dirt trail on the left (not the access road). There are several different trail markings: red, white, yellow, orange, green, blue- disregard them all, there does not seem to be ONE uniformed blaze color for the trail you will be following. Just remember, your goal is the second highest point in Bucks County, try to stay on the ‘main’ trail and head in a general westerly direction. Try to remember land marks on your way up the trail; it will be helpful on your trip back to your car!

ICE AGE SERIES

This series is composed of seven Pleistocene animals; each box is rather large, great for hitch hikers. Also, the stamps are rather LARGE; make sure your logbook can accommodate these stamps. Bring your own ink and pen. Enjoy!!

Box #1- Doedicurus

To find this box, head up the trail until it bends toward the right; notice a tree with four trunks, straight ahead. (You will know you are in the right place if the trail makes a sharp turn to the left a few paces after the tree.) From the four trunk tree, take a bearing of 220*- go 17 paces, through the brush, to a larger shark finned shape boulder. Behind the “shark-fin” you will find two more large boulders- between them is a small tree, at the base is a pile of rocks- Doedicurus hides inside.

Make your way back to the trail, and continue in the direction you were heading.

Box #2- Woolly Mammoth

Notice that the smaller rocks are getting larger, there seem to be boulders everywhere! After crossing over a fallen log, there is a small outcropping of boulders on the right. (Just as a side note- there is some graffiti on the boulders which may be offensive to letterboxers, be forewarned). At the ‘crest’ of the hill there is a ‘Y’ intersection of two trails. In the center is a large, hump backed boulder, which has some blackened out graffiti on the end. Behind this boulder is a low stump, which is hollow. On top of the stump is a suspicious rock, underneath is the Woolly Mammoth.

Continue on the trail (to the left side of the hump backed boulder).

Box #3- Saber-toothed Cat

Keep hiking on the trail, maneuvering around the boulders. When the trail cuts closely against a very large boulder, stop! This would make a great place for a saber-toothed cat to perch, and watch for prey. On the east side of this ‘perching’ rock, is a crevice. Another rock has been placed in between the two rocks, creating a little cache, in which hides the saber-toothed cat.

Box #4- Woolly Rhinoceros

Shortly after the Saber-toothed cat letterbox, you will notice a rock that ‘does not fit in’! It is very different than the rocks around it; this large brown jelly bean rock is home to a Woolly Rhinoceros. Check out the backside of the rock for a suspicious pile of rocks, inside you will find a Rhino.

Continue on the trail. It gets a little hairy at this point, the discernable trail disappears, but if you continue in a westerly direction you should be okay.
Look for a tree with a yellow blaze on top of a white blaze to know you are on the right track.

At this point the boulders are huge!!

Box #5- Giant Sloth

Keep on the ‘path’ until you come to a point where you need to cross over a large fallen log. From this point, keep looking for a shaggy barked tree growing on top of a large flat boulder. In the middle of the path is a small tree that resembles a bird foot, with three unique branches. There is small rock with a white marking, and a little cave on the left, it has a mossy green patch on the right side of the opening. You will know you are in the right cave if the outside boulder had a very small tree ‘growing’ on the side of the rock. This small tree has its top cut off, but you can see the root wedged in the rock.

Make your way down into the ‘cave’ to the very end. Here the rock is striped with faint white lines, get out your flashlight (you DID bring a flashlight, right?) and explore the gap between the rocks at chest level on the right. Hidden behind a stone is the Giant Sloth.

Make your way back to the trail. Your next accomplishment will be getting to the Top Rock! Notice the highest point on the mountain? You need to make your way up and over this outcropping. You will know you are in the right spot if you see ‘Pin Head’ and some other offensive graffiti.

Box #6- Merriam’s Teratorn

From this point, you will notice many turkey vultures flying around. Make your way to JIMI- just beyond Jimi, is a ‘V’ tree. Head west to a tree with a red mark- at the base of this red marked tree is a small pile of rocks; Merriam’s Teratorn is hiding here.

Box #7- Irish Elk

From the Red marked tree, notice a large balanced rock at 170*. Make your way to the balanced rock, from here 20 paces to a large ‘V’ tree, on the left. One of the trunks is broken off and rests across the boulders. Inside the broken end, underneath a stone, is the Irish Elk.

Wow! You have found all the Ice Age Series of letterboxes—and now your next accomplishment will be getting back to your car! Remember landmarks, and head in a general easterly direction.
