Directions: (Please note: bring your own stamp pad, pen, compass.)
Long Island Expressway(495) to William Floyd Parkway, Exit 68. Travel north to Rte.25. Follow Rte.25 go east three and a half miles. Parking for the Calverton Trail is on the left, near the sign board, just past the motel.

This box is placed here, near Calverton National Cemetery to honor those who selflessly paid the cost of the freedoms the rest of us selfishly take for granted. Consider the paraphrased thoughts of B. Kottman:

Around the world in times of trouble, Americans have and will continue to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure not just peace for America, but peace around the world. It is this capacity for sacrifice that makes this nation great. Think about that chain of sacrifice stretching back into the past and leading on into the future. Our freedom is secured by the fallen. We build monuments and memorials not only to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but as a reminder to those who come after us that freedom is not free. Sometimes freedom comes at a great cost. To them, and the ones who will follow in their footsteps in the future, I say thank you.

Clues: This trail zig zags back and forth , so be prepared. It is 1.2 miles to the box and back. First the trail heads east, then turns west, then east. At the point where the trail heads west once again you should stop where you find an almost dead pine tree on your right and a two foot tall stump on your left . Face in a northeasterly direction. You may be able to see a big green D directional sign for Calverton National Cemetery.
From the dead pine look 45* for a three sister tree about ten feet from the trail. The Salute to the Veterans Letterbox is resting at their base. Please rehide carefully. Return to your car the way you came.
