6/13/07 - Swoop is still resting comfortably in his nest - reports of him being missing were false!

7/8/06 - Swoop has been recarved and should be resting in his new nest!

Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, was founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School, making EMU the first state teacher education school west of Albany, NY. In 1899, we became Michigan State Normal College, then the name was changed to Eastern Michigan College in 1956, and finally in 1959 to Eastern Michigan University.

Once known as the "Home of the Hurons," EMU now participates in NCAA Division I as part of the Mid American Conference and we are known as the "Eagles." Once a Huron always an Eagle? To misquote a phrase. Our mascot is the Mighty Swoop, a majestic bird whose antics at our athletic events spurs on "Gang Green" our student support group.

To find Swoop, you will need to first find a parking space near the Ypsilanti Water Tower, a local landmark across from EMU's main campus (where Washtenaw splits and becomes Cross Street.) This giant is the source of many local legends, but for your search pay close attention to the cost of construction and to the fees charged to local residents and businesses. Also make note of its height and its width at the base.

Cross Street at 25 degrees and you will be in front of Welch Hall - AKA Normal Training School, 18__ __ . (A.)

Head (A.) - 6 = __ __ Degrees to the first split. Go (A.) - 38 = __ __ Degrees past the X to a stone courtyard.

This plaza is named for __ __ __ Jr. (B.)
Born - Jan. __ __ , 1929 (C.)
Died - April __ , 1968 (D.)
4 plaques honor the Civil Rights movement but stand at the HEAD of the plaza. Go east, then north, then east again. Find the rock marking the site where the Michigan Education Association was organized. Old Pierce Hall was built in 18 __ __ (E.) and torn down in 19 __ __ (F.)

On your left is new Pierce Hall and if you look east you'll see a marvelous concert hall named for FHP. Study the name on the building. It doesn't look quite right. Add the two letters together that resemble roman numerals in the last word. __ + __ = ___ (G.)

Standing on the sidewalk in front of new Pierce Hall
Go north if A+C+D+E+F+G < 250.
Go South if A+C+D+E+F+G > 250.

As you pass the corner of the "Place" to get smart and the place to get back to nature, notice that the sidewalk slopes downhill. Pass the home of the EMU Student Newspaper on your right. Pass the parking lot on your left. Now you'll see the theatres on your right. Which ones' name ironically means "a peculiar way of acting"
_____________ take the first letter of this name and it is the __ __ th letter in the alphabet(H.)

Keep going downhill in the same direction until you spot 3 trees in a cement circle. Now go west between Estelle & Harrold to East Circle Drive. Pass a Lot of Snow and head to the pavillion. From the north end of the pavillion look for a cement (not Black Top) path at 300 degrees and follow this to the lake. Find the walk in honor of Bob England who said "Everyone who participates is a winner" in 19 __ __. (I.)

Cross the bridge over the lake to a circular path and take the stairs near Big Bob's Lake House. Head to H + I + 245 = ____ degrees past the courts. Coming in the fall of 2006 is the new student center on your left. Head to the Towers (Pittman, Hoyt, & Hill) Go thru Mayhew Lot # 2 and pass emergency phone # 36. Follow the street past the Cornell Court Apartments on your right. Stop at the stop sign.

Thought I forgot about the Water tower?
It cost $21, __ __ __ . 63 (J.)
Take the path at J-A-C-D-E-F = _______ degrees. Heading toward Rynearson Stadium & the Convocation Center. Stay on this path until it splits. At the Y Intersection take the blacktop path to the right. When you break free of the woods, turn left through the field and go past the dirt piles. Stay along the edge of the woods and you will soon come to an opening that leads to a clearing with a HUGE downed tree. Swoop has built his nest at the base of this tree under a big piece of bark on the west side.

You can retrace your steps through campus or for a quicker route back at the end of the path back go right at the 4 way stop go left on Collegewood. Collegewood will curve thru a quiet neighborhood where many EMU Prof's live. At Kingwood and Collegewood cross the street and cross Oakwood Street to the parking structure. Continue past the Department of Public Safety to emergency phone # 26. Go south to the clock tower in Halle Library. Go 150 degrees to where the 2 way traffic ends. Go the wrong way. Pass Munson Apts. & Strong Hall. At the Rackham School of Special Education go south and pass the Hover Labratory heading toward McKinney (the current Student Union.) You'll see Sherzer and Starkweather Halls on your left and to the south you'll see the Ypsilanti Water Tower!
