Angel Pets

Whispering Pines Pet Cemetery
Gardner Road, Binghamton, NY

These letterboxes are in honor of the pets of our past; those best friends and family members who saw us through important stages of life and play prominently in cherished memories. This series is a tribute to those dogs, cats, and other animals that enriched our lives, so please share your memories and they will continue to live on.

Caution: The woods contain a lot of dead wood and branches on the ground, so please walk carefully.

Directions: Take Park Avenue to Morgan Road. Continue on Morgan Road, driving past the Binghamton Zoo, until you reach a fork. Remain straight and the road turns into Gardner (Morgan Road veers to the right). Go up a short steep hill and around a bend, and the cemetery will be on your right. You can park on the side of the road in front of the cemetery or in a little parking lot on the east end of the cemetery.

Dog: Find “Rinny.” Take 22 steps at 200 degrees, where you can easily enter the woods. Take another 45 steps at 280 degrees and you will arrive at a large pine tree. The dog plays at the base of the tree.

Cat: Go back to the cemetery and find “Gabby” a.k.a. “Gabbster.” Walk straight ahead at 200 degrees until you reach the woods. Carefully walk over a downed wire fence and stop at the base of a large fallen pine. Continue 14 steps down the “path” and then another 14 steps at 260 degrees. Look for a tree that isn’t a pine, and then find the point where the three trunks of the tree meet. The cat perches here, watching the birds. Be careful not to trip over the wire fence when returning to the cemetery.

Update! The cat was found in June 2017. The finder reported: I'm happy to say that the are both still there! The cat is in the base of the large fallen pine under a cairn.

Thanks for sharing your memories!
