Once upon a time, there was a Buckeye who lived, loved and partied in Columbus, Ohio, home of Ohio State University. Because of his loyalty to his school, he spent many years fostering an enmity toward all those who favored the University of Michigan. After he grew up, he decided that his fear of Wolverines was perhaps unfounded. Being a very brave little buckeye, he decided to test his courage by visiting the home of his rivals. He travelled to Ann Arbor, and was very impressed when he visited the "Big House". He arrived on a Saturday in fall, however, and soon the swarm of locals arriving for the day's athletic contest began to overwhelm him. Being as smart as he was courageous, he decided he'd better wait out gameday somewhere else. Being a nut, he couldn't travel very fast, so he had to seek shelter somewhere fairly close to the stadium.

He followed some train tracks north away from the stadium, to a street whose name reflected the newfound freedom he was experiencing. The street name included a directional, so he proceeded in that direction. This "freedom" street eventually crossed one named after the mother region of letterboxing, so he was obligated to turn down that street. In a very short while, this street crossed one with a compound name, both halves of which were nice forest terms, which he considered a good sign. On this street, he found a cul-de-sac, and the entrance to a woods area named for one of the city's first settlers, a man who came to Ann Arbor in 1824, three months after the city was founded. Upon entering the trail, he perused the trail sign and immediately had to make a decision. Since he had been traveling north since he left Columbus, he opted to go north again.

Once on the trail, he crossed a very large downed tree - which isn't easy for a little buckeye to do. He travelled down a hill past a nature study sign, up a hill past another downed tree, to a place where the trail turned away from the signs of civilization he'd been seeing. He headed down another hill, and despite having roots in the trail to help as steps, he began to roll toward a steep drop-off. Luckily a tree right in the path stopped his roll. He noticed something unusual at a bearing of 75 degrees, approximately 16 human steps from the path, although it would be many more than that for this little nut. He saw a large circular hole, surrounded by limbs that had clearly been placed by someone other than Mother Nature. Standing next to the large tree whose roots guarded this large hole, he noticed a satisfactory shelter at 36 degrees. The Brave Little Buckeye tucked inside this safe spot to wait until the end of the game, when he could feel safe again!

The first part of these clues should be deciphered ahead of time or followed in a car, as it is too long of a walk unless you're REALLY motivated. You'll reach a part where the car can't help you any more. It's a fairly short trip from there.
