Ruth's Box in the Sculpture Gardens LB
Planted by: Rabbit's Friends and Relations
April 2, 2006
Hike length: about half a mile one-way, some steep climbing at first
Stamp: hand carved image of a 5-year-old's self portrait
Fair weather ONLY (those rocks could get really slippery!)

This box is located within Minnewaska State Park on Route 44/55. There are many parking areas/pull offs/and trailheads located along the highway within the park. If you are arriving from the east, watch for PeterKill Parking area on the right, then an entrance to Minnewaska St Park on the left. A couple of minutes later you should feel as if you are driving up into the sky... there will be a huge rock wall on your right, and a small pull-off immediately ahead as the road curves to the left. The view is terrific here - worth stopping for. [[be sure to have the clues for The AlphabetBandits' box "R", as it begins here too, and is the reason we found this place! ]]

The trickiest part of this letterbox expedition comes right at the beginning... You will need to cross the highway and scramble up to the top of the ridge. Listen carefully for traffic (especially on the way back to the car, as your line of sight is not great). There is a relatively easy way to get up if you walk a few dozen yards farther down the road, and once you get started, you'll find lots of little paths leading to the top. Our two-year-old scrambled up like a little mountain goat...

At the top, head to the right - roughly south west, and travel along the top of the ridge for about a half mile. There are several paths to choose from, and it doesn't matter which you use at this point. Just don't stray too far from the cliffs on your right and you'll be in the right spot. Beware of broken glass - it is everywhere!!

You'll know you're getting close when you spot the seal. And then HEADY LURK, and a 5-pointed star and crescent moon, a dog with a bone, a lion with another dog nearby, a giant's sofa and firepit, a sunbather, and a tower... But the four kids voted the playhouse the best - or maybe the Stonehenge stage... You'll want to walk around and maybe add one of your own!

When you're ready for the LB, return to Stonehenge. Stand on the rocky rock with your back to the lintel stone. Find 220*, and walk about 22 steps (past our initials!) to a petrified, legless trilobyte (about three feet long). Look deep under the pincers end, behind some rocks wedged in to keep it hidden, for Ruth's LB. As usual, rehide it well, please :)

Return the way you came - careful going back down!

Please contact us if the box needs any TLC...Thank you.
