The Story:
An American War became a comic opera called the Toledo War. It was fought in 1835 between Ohio and Michigan. The conflict involved a badly drawn boundary line, a 19-year old Governor and two armies that got lost in swamps.
Since all this happened in Southern Michigan and Northern Ohio, why is this letterbox in Sault Saint Marie? Well, way back in 1787 when the boundary between Michigan territory and Ohio the line was set by the Ordinance of 1787,
“This ordinance set the southern boundary of Michigan territory at the line drawn from the southern tip of Lake Michigan due east to where it meets Lake Erie. One problem: The south tip of Lake Michigan was determined to be further north than where it is actually located. This made the boundary line too far north. A later survey in 1818 ordered by the territorial governor of Michigan established the true boundary but it was too late. Ohio, claimed the original line which was drawn in error, giving Ohio the mouth of the Maumee River and the area that is now the city of Toledo. When Michigan sought statehood, the dispute rose again. Governor Stephens Mason (19 years old) and Ohio Governor Robert Lucas raised funds, formed militias and sent them off to battle. Problem was both armies became lost in the great black swamp missed the battle and the President, Andrew Jackson solved the conflict by awarding Toledo to Ohio and the entire upper peninsula to Michigan.
