I originally carved this stamp as a handstamp for the 2006 'Shimmy for the Cure' Middle Eastern dance benefit held in Rockford on Feb 25th 2006. It seemed a shame to just let it sit and collect dust so I thought it would enjoy a second life as a letterbox.

This box is hidden in Aldeen Park on Alpine Rd, less than a mile north of East State Street (Business 20) in Rockford.

Time: 20-30 minutes
Difficulty: easy to intermediate. Some steep climbing is involved, but it is not dangerous for supervised kids.

To begin, park near the picnic shelter and cross the creek on the wooden bridge. Those who choose the correct way forward will be the ones more interested in woodpeckers than in fungus.

When next presented with a choice, be prepared to huff and puff a bit if you want to find your prize. Then, follow the way that overlooks the way you came to get this far.

Traipse over the oddly parallel root patterns and past the one-sided maple. When you finally find a place to catch your breath, you'll wish you hadn't sat down since you'll have little back support.

As you rest, look out at the carnage. Your prize lies somewhere in this chaos. Take the path in front of you and follow it until you feel as though you might be swallowed by the fallen tendrils of the forest. To your right, just off the path, is a natural jungle gym just dying to be played on. You won't have far to climb before you find a tree hiding your treasure in its mouth.
