In 1954 a cartoon character was created by Don Woods to be used on his TV weathers shows in Tulsa, Oklahom. Today Gusty is famous. He is Don Woods' legal trademark and is in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC and the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa. He was selected as the state's official cartoon character in 2005. This box is part of the Oklahoma Centinneal Series to honor our upcoming birthday party in 2007.

Clues:

Spavinaw is the birthplace of Mickey Mantle and home to a major souce of Tulsa's water - Lake Spavinaw. It is at the junction of state highways 20 and 82. Take exit 255 (Claremore) from I-44 - the Will Rogers Turnpike, then take highway 20 through Pryor and Salina to Spavinaw. This is a "scenic" route - meaning lots of twists and turns on a good - but narrow - 2 lane road.

You'll pass Spavinaw State Park on your right (be sure to stop in there to find "Lynn Riggs Players" letterbox).
For "Gusty" continue around past the dam. Turn right on the north end of the dam by the "Spavinaw Lake" sign. You'll pass the unique police station and go past dozens of floating dock buildings that were high and dry due to the drought on the day we planted the box.
Follow the blacktop road around to the end of the road turnaround. Park and carefully climb the hill - starting at the end of the cable that stretches across the "dead end". Using the line formed by the cable, continue uphill. You'll pass two evergreens just below a shelf of crumbling rock. In the third evergreen you'll find "Gusty". Turn around and enjoy a great view of the lake!

Happy Questing!
