Note: This box has been temporarily removed. I hope to be able to re-plant it soon. Keep posted.

The Pinebush Letterbox can be found in the Albany Pinebush Preserve. Located in the heart of the Capital Region, the Albany Pine Bush is one of the few remaining examples of an inland pine barrens ecosystem in the world. This gently rolling sand plain is home to an unique diversity of animals and plants, including 20 rare species and two rare natural communities.
Take Route 20 west, to reach Route 155. Take a right onto 155, heading north towards Central Avenue (Route 5). Stay on Rte. 155 until you see your third traffic light. At the light, take a right into the parking area at the future home of the Pine Bush Preserve Discovery Center (195 New Karner Road) and park. Look for the Pine Bush Preserve kiosk on the right of the parking area (behind the building).
Enter the preserve, taking a left to get onto the marked Blue Trail. At the top of a fairly high hill, make sure to stay right to stay on the blue trail. You will decend "stairs" in the sand. Keep to the blue trail until the path forks.
Take the left fork and you will see the White trail marker on your left. Take a left turn to pick up this trail. This trail meanders, but remains clearly marked. After a meander to your right on the trail, you will climb a gentle rise. Here the White trail takes a hard curve to the left (south). After this curve, count off 2 White Trail markers (about 145 feet from that curve). At this second marker, face left. Immediately in front of you, look for a large tall pine tree that stands above the rest(approx. 40+ feet tall) surrounded by much younger deciduous trees. Gently, walk to the eastern side of the tree (the side farthest from the White Trail). The letterbox is buried slightly(critter started), covered by pine needles and branches. Your total milege to the box from the start of the search is about .5 miles.
Be aware of ticks during mild months, and dress accordingly. While the area near the box has been part of an intentional burn, and there is little plant growth now, this spring may see new growth. Please tread lightly!
Enjoy your hike in this unusual ecosystem.
