HIKE: ¼ mile and 100 feet vertical
DIFFICULTY: wear sturdy shoes and go slow, may not be appropriate for kids

From I-10, take Speedway west for 7.1 miles to the Scenic View pullout at the top of Gates Pass. Park your car at the far end of the parking lot, near a ramada that looks down over Old Tucson Studios to the southwest. Enjoy the informational signs, then as you’re reading about the history of Gates Pass, look up at the hill directly in front of you. The top of this un-named peak is your goal. There are many good routes, all involve a scramble toward the end. Watch your hand placement to avoid broken glass and sharp desert floras and faunas. At the top, you’ll find three man-made rock benches. Sitting on the largest, you can see Old Tucson at 250* magnetic and Kitt Peak National Observatory in the distance at 220*. After enjoying the view and a breather, climb carefully around to the north side of the peak. Orient yourself so you’re sitting on a precipice with little rock buildings at 338*, 18*, and 30*. The box is about 20 feet directly below you, underneath a jojoba plant that’s on the near side of the 5-ft. wide landing. You’ll need to go around to the east and down to get there.

Locals know this mountain pass as the premier place to watch sunsets and/or summer thunderstorms. Kristal used to climb up here all the time in college, even at night!

This box is dedicated to our friends Amethyst and Rich, who got engaged to be married up here a few years ago.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
