America’s Castle: Fonthill

Renaissance man Henry Chapman Mercer took to the extreme the idea that a man's home is his castle. In 1908, the well-traveled entrepreneur set about building Fonthill, his concrete dream home, from the inside out. Once the central rooms were completed, the next ones were started. No complete blueprints existed, only sketches and a grand scheme in the self-taught architect's head. In addition to Mercer's many achievements — artist, anthropologist, archaeologist, amateur fiddler — he was an enthusiastic collector. In 1870, at 14, Mercer embarked on a five-month European tour with his mother and Aunt Lela that ended in Florence, where the wealth of paintings, sculptures and other art complemented what he had seen in other countries and fed his imagination. Mercer studied art and history at Harvard, spoke four languages, and graduated from law school at the University of Pennsylvania and passed the bar exam, though he never practiced.

This letterbox is a tribute to the home that Henry Chapman Mercer built and to the languages in which he was fluent. Hope you enjoy the hunt! Please be respectful of the park, bring your own ink and use caution when finding this box.
