(This box is gone. Bummer. I liked the stamp.)

Once upon a time, buffalo wandered the hills around Newport Beach and Irvine. They are long gone now, but there remains one image showing their time here.

To reach this letterbox, exit the 405 Freeway at MacArthur Blvd. and head south. After passing under the 73, you will cross Bison Ave. Turn left at the next street, Bonita Canyon Dr. Notice the buffalo statue on the north-east corner of the intersection. Turn right at the next light, Mesa View. Turn right at the stop sign onto Ford Rd. You will be driving next to the Bonita Canyon Sports Park West. Ahead, on the right will be a restroom building. Park just past this building.

From the sidewalk, you can look down the hill and see a large storm drain structure. Beyond the drain is a large rock outcrop rising out of the hillside. Local rock climbers call this the Buffalo Chip.

There are two ways to reach the Buffalo Chip. You can go down the hillside in front of you (fairly steep and there is the possibility of trampling plants) or you can walk back down Ford Rd., up Mesa View and back along Bonita Canyon toward MacArthur. This will lead you to the service road that you can see leading down to the storm drain.

Either way you chose to get down there, you will need to climb up to the top of the Buffalo Chip. The easiest way is up the right side if you are looking at it from near the storm drain. When you reach the top, continue out toward the steep edge. There you will find a metal bolt in the top of the Chip. Stand near the bolt and take a compass sighting a 206°. You should see a small rock outcrop just to the right of a tree.

Make your way down to the outcrop. The box is hidden atop this outcrop, under the branches of the tree. It is covered with rocks and leaves.
