Settle down, class, and listen up. I hope you all brought your permission slips for today's field trip. No slip, no trip. Muffy, Kristi, stop chatting.

We'll be touring the downtown branch of the Spokane Public Library. To provide incentive for exploring the library's resources, you'll be assigned a research task that will help you prepare for Friday's 7th period quiz. Bring pencil and paper, some change in case you want to photocopy something, and taxi fare in case you miss our ride back. The school bus will leave promptly at half past four, so don't be late. Boys in the back row, this means you. I'm handing out task sheets now; take one and pass it along.

LIBRARY RESEARCH TASK LIST

Note that your research will lead you to a specific book by helping you fill out the following 10-digit (or letter) blank call number, which we'll call your Goal Number:

1. Begin in the periodicals section on the 3rd floor. Search the microfilm drawers for a magazine issue whose call letters are 93C1884. Do not be afraid to ask a librarian for help. Go to the article on page 82 (film frames 1967-1976) of that issue and read it for edification. A photo caption on the first page of the article mentions someone named Pat. Note Pat's last name.

2. Wander to the library's genealogy section, also on the 3rd floor. Find the Genealogical Gazetteer of England” (call number R/GEN/914.2003/Sm56) and look up the entry for Pat's last name. Counting the name itself as the first word, and counting all whole numbers as single words, count as follows and fill in the appropriate blanks in your Goal Number
The second letter of the second word goes in position 10.
The fifth letter of the eighth word goes in position 7.
The fourth letter of the 12th word goes in position 9.
Before leaving this floor, it is well worth your while to take in the view outside the bank of windows on the northern wall.

3. Now travel by stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor. Find the vintage map of old Spokane, which hangs on the wall outside the regional materials archive known as the Northwest Room. Note which number, on the map's key, denotes the Spokane Broom Factory. Write the two digits of this number in spaces 4 and 6 of your Goal Number.

4. Posted on the ends of various bookshelves in the library, you will find a Quick Guide to the Dewey Decimal System. Find one of these guides and use it to fill in the following blanks in your Goal Number:
The last digit of the code for the subject “Middle Ages” goes in position 5.
The first digit of the code for “Drawing” goes in position 2.

5. Your last task leads you outside the 2nd-floor entrance to the library. Here, in the lobby area, across from the circulation desk, an artwork consisting of etched copper and glass plates graces the eastern wall. The piece, titled “Mnemosyne's Alphabet,” commemorates the various means by which cultures have preserved their memories. It was created by Dennis Evans, and a cool interpretive brochure is available in the literature racks on the northern wall of this lobby. Enjoy the work, take a rest on the benches in the cove, and then record the following to complete your Goal Number:
The first letter of the 3rd word in the column under “Infinite” goes in position 1.
The first letter of the 2nd word in the column under “Magic” goes in position 8.
The numeral that repeats down the last column of the first image under the word “Cybernetic” goes in position 3.

If you have completed your research correctly, you should now have the full Goal Number. Find the book with this as its call number, take it to a quiet spot, and savor its contents. Please be sure to place it back in its correct spot when you are finished.
