***The box #3 has disappeared but the hike and view are still worth it!!! Enjoy.

This letterbox is quite different than our first one in Tarrytown. But I'm sure you will all like it. The view on top is amazing!!

Directions: From route 287/87, take route 9W north. On your right in 3 miles is Rockland Lake State Park.
Upon entering the park stay to your right. There will be a building on your left with the lake and parking lots. The road to the right will bring you pass a sign that says Executive Golf Course. Make a right onto Landing Rd (there is a no outlet sign). Soon you will see Knickerbocker Engine Co 1. Just pass this firehouse is a dirt parking area and where the trail begins.

Trail Difficulty: Moderate to hard
Time: 2 hours

***Caution: The trail consists of some steep rocky parts and has a very large cliff at top. Please be careful especially when on top***

BOX #1 - Our adventure began about 20 years ago on this very mountain. We parked in the dirt parking spaces and walked towards the yellow gate. From there we heard rustling in the bushes to the right. We found a trail heading in the same direction. The trail we took had green markings so we decided to go and find out what the strange noises were. At the 5th green marking from the yellow gate we could hear the noises were getting louder. We stopped for a moment to listen… The leaves were rustling but what could it be? Could it be a family of wild turkeys roaming in the bushes? We wondered if it could be a deer coming down the mountain. Our young fair lady bravely took 7 paces further down the trail (pace = every time your right foot hits the ground). She looked to her left and saw before her the culprit to the noises we were hearing. The noises we heard came from the elephant’s trunk.

BOX #2 – After finding our new friend Grizz to be very kind and somewhat peaceful we stayed awhile before continuing our adventure. Who knew wild animals could be so friendly! Grizz told us about some of his other friends on the mountain. He told us about Jo-Jo and Wally too. Grizz offered to take us on a tour to visit his friends. We were very excited by the opportunity to make more friends during our adventure on Hook Mountain. Bringing us back on the green trail we headed up the rocky slope. It was very important to follow the green markings to stay on the trail. During our trip up the rocky slope we had to take a number of breaks because Grizz wasn’t the young cub he used to be. We didn’t mind though because we were tired as well. Soon enough the trail brought us to a grassy section. Grizz was getting excited because his friend Jo-Jo lived just around the corner. To our right Grizz pointed out two forts. One was made of wood and the other of stone. Under some stones we found Jo-Jo in his old stone home.

BOX #3 – After eating some steaks with Jo-Jo and Grizz we headed up the trail together to go find Wally. Just as Grizz had said, Jo-Jo was also very kind and fun to be with. He helped us find the best stones to step on so we wouldn’t get our feet wet and muddy. We all made it safe and sound except for our friend Jo-Jo. He slipped on the last stone and got all wet. Then once on the uphill he tripped on the log and was covered in dirt. The young boy who jumps a lot ran off ahead along the green trail. Near the top of the trail the group arrived at a fork. The fork was marked with a small pile of stones. The young boy who jumps a lot had ran ahead following the green trail. Jo-Jo said he would find him and bring him back. The young fair lady asked Jo-Jo, “How will you know where he went?” Jo-Jo replied quickly, “Oh, I have been following his scent all the way up this trail. It will be easy!” The group waited at the fork in the trail with the pile of stones for the young boy who jumps a lot. Jo-Jo and the young boy who jumps a lot soon came and rejoined our group. The young boy who jumps a lot told us about a silly bird he encountered on his journey. The bird saw him jumping down the trail and thought he was a kangaroo all the way from Austria. Upon hearing this we all knew this bird wasn’t the smartest bird around. Either way we continued up the mountain to the left of the fork. At the top Grizz showed us Wally’s favorite hiding spot. It was right behind a rock with the Omega symbol and 2001 written on it. Sure enough Wally was hiding right behind the rock.

To our surprise Wally was the bird the young boy who jumps a lot had already met. Wally saw my backpack and asked me to go for a quick flight with him around the cliffs. I was utterly confused as to how I would do that. Wally seemed to think my backpack was a jet pack?! We all knew that while being very nice – Wally had a lot to learn. We spent the rest of the day exploring the top of Hook Mountain with our three friends: Grizz the bear, Jo-Jo the Lion, and Wally the Eagle.

To get back to your cars simply follow the green trail exactly as you came in. We hope you had fun!
