As of August 27, 2009, this box has been recarved, a new logbook has been made, and it is relocated... close to the old place but not quite.

Techny Basin Conservation Area is located south of Willow and east of Johns Drive in Glenview. Finding it can be a challenge. From Willow, go south on Johns Drive or come from LeHigh to Chestnut to Johns. At Ravine Way, go east a short distance to Claire Court. Wiggle around on Claire to the cul de sac. Don’t park on the cul de sac. It’s posted, “No parking.” Swing around the circle and find the gravel entrance drive. Park in the lot provided.

This letterbox adventure is an easy one. At certain seasons you may wish to wear some repellent. The mosquitoes can be troublesome. Your dog is welcome on a leash. You may want to look for Oh Say Can You See the same day.

Red foxes have a rusty red coat with white underbelly, black ear tips and legs, and a bushy tail with a white tip. The "red" tone can vary from crimson to golden. They are becoming a familiar sight in suburban areas, so watch out for your small dog. A red fox wouldn’t mind making off with him or her. They also eat rodents, insects, fruits, worms, eggs, mice, and other small animals.

This conservation area is special because a rare form of water mussel is found in the waters of the North Branch of the Chicago River. Many animals can be seen in the conservation area, especially in spring, summer and fall. Our little red fox might be out prowling for its dinner, so keep your eyes open. You might make a list of the animals (especially birds) that you see on your hunt.

From the parking lot find the North Navy Ditch Trail heading south. After you’ve walked a short distance, you will see some tall poles painted yellow. Step through this bit of a gate and continue on the trail until you can go down 10, across 15 and up a bunch. Follow the North Navy Ditch Trail around to the right until you are at the split rail fence. Walk along the fence a few feet, looking upward. There will be a tree on the right with a V branch going over your head to the left (On the other side of the split rail fence). Climb over the fence and follow the two branches over your head and the one dead branch at your feet to an old stump. You'll find your treasure there.

As always, be careful that no one sees you as you log the box. Carefully replace the LB exactly where you found it and replace the bricks over it. Probably some mugglers were here earlier in the spring, so do hide it carefully.
