Man, it's getting hot. It's been 2 1/2 hours since we started. As we crossed this last bridge, I remember that I was Danny's age, not more than 5 or 6 when MY grandpa took me to see the leaping kings. I'll take him there once we rest up.

There's Monkey Wards. I should tell Danny Boy what it was like before it became the local seat of power. I wonder if Danny will notice the brick castle with dripping icicles, basalt arches, or the birch guardian.

I remember holding on to Grandpa's hand for dear life. I felt like I would be swept away if I got too close. And the kings...they were flying! Now there's promenades and plazas. It's beautiful, spectacular, but it's been tamed. Not so wild. And the kings are mostly gone. That's progress.

I'll take grandson all the way, through the gate and show him how high: 1748. Then point out the benchmark just steps away. I'll show him the brick sentinels, remnants of a bygone era.

Heading back up the road and just under the cables, I'll bet we can find one last king, left at the street lamp, between two pines, in the big rocks at the foot of a lone deciduous tree.

Is that the "Rocky Theme" again? You'd think people would get tired of it blaring year after year. "Hurry, Grandpa, or we'll be the last ones!" "Okay, Danny Boy, let's go get our T-Shirts!"

Danny and his Grandpa are immortalized near the end of the pack at the corner of Spokane Falls Blvd and Post Street, downtown Spokane.
