Newspaper Rock is a state monument located between Monticello and Moab, Utah. It is a 200 ft. panel of densely etched petroglyphs. This is one of the finest examples of rock art in the U.S. Some of this art dates back 1500 years or more to present day graffiti. There is a fence around it to protect it from modern day graffiti.
Artwork is represented from Archaic, Fremont, Ancient Puebloan (Anasazi), Ute, Navajo, Hispanic and Anglo cultures. The art panel is found along Indian Creek, which was a main route from the canyons of the west to the mountains in the east. The Navajo (Dine) people call this rock Tse'Hane (rock that tells a story).

Difficulty: Drive-by.

Location: Newspaper Rock is along hwy. 211, which is an access road from Hwy. 191 to Canyonlands National Park (Needles District). Drive down 211 for about 12 miles to get there. Hwy. 211 is about 15 miles north of Monticello and about 40 miles south of Moab. There are 8 free campsites across the street along Indian Creek. NOTE *** As of 2007, these campsites are no longer open and are not considered safe because of increasing flashflood danger! The original box was muggled by geocachers, so hopefully the new location is more out of sight!

Clues: Too easy. After enjoying Tse' Hane, stroll down the walkway to the restrooms. Walk in front of the restroom doors and note the trail straight ahead. From the edge of the cement pad, go straight ahead and follow a well worn little trail as it wanders away from the parking area and goes along the main road. After a minute or two the trail veers uphill to the right. Stop for a second and spot two large flat rocks right ahead, one on each side of the trail. Straight ahead is steep rockface wall. There is a fun hoodoo of rock on the very top, formed from a different layer of sandstone. Walk straight ahead, it's about 25 steps from the large pinkish flat rock on your left, to the rockface. There is a great little piƱon pine on your left at the wall with a SPOR. Feel free to add more rocks when you rehide the box.
