In early May of each year, top runners and amateurs alike take to the streets of Cincinnati for the Flying Pig Marathon. Though it’s a serious race (one of the top 20 marathons in the country), it also has its fun side. The marathon adheres to the “flying pig” theme down to almost every detail, with costumed runners, volunteers known as “grunts,” squealing fans lining the sidelines, and an official race mascot greeting runners at the “finish swine." The Flying Pig Letterbox salutes the runners and lies along the official race route.

To the box:

Start at the front door of the Running Spot. Carefully cross the street (use the crosswalk) and head in a westerly direction to a place where the owls might take a load off their feet. Walk northerly to the big rock commemorating this place. Due north of here you’ll descend a staircase. Turn left at the bike rack and walk 8 paces (1 pace equals 2 steps, or about 5 feet). At the bottom of the steps is a missing brick where the Flying Pig resides behind a rock.

All the customary pleas regarding stealth and concealment apply here. Please try to camouflage the rock with a little dirt when you replace it so it looks more “natural.”

Have fun, and please let me know if you find the Flying Pig.
