9/20/2010 - This has been reported as missing. I will check soon and update this site.
“Gallery Park” on The Glen is on the grounds that once was Glenview Naval Air Station (GNAS). It was originally built in 1923 and operated for 58 years as a training base for navy pilots. All airports have rotating beacons. In 1995, GNAS was closed as part of a military restructuring. The land (1,121 acres) was deeded back to Glenview by the U.S. Department of Defense and became known as The Glen in 1999. The city of Glenview took the land over for housing, a shopping and restaurant area, movie theater, two golf courses, a middle school, and a children’s museum (and a bunch of other neat things).
Gallery Park is maintained by Glenview Park District, but part of it is shared by Attea Middle School. A walking trail goes all around it, so plan for a nice walk on a clear day. (Or a rainy walk on a wet day.) There is a playground and water fountain for the children to play on and splash in. This letterbox adventure is an easy one, but you’ll need to follow the clues closely. Patriot Boulevard, West Lake Avenue, and Chestnut Avenue border the park. The east side of the park is almost at Lehigh.
Check out The Glen Park and then drive over to Chestnut Road. Drive west from the park until you come to The National Nine Golf Course. Go into the parking lot and head to the west side of the lot. Locate the red fire hydrant. There are some evergreen trees near that hydrant. Count from the hydrant... 8 trees. Look in the tree.
Be discreet as you log this one. There may be many people enjoying their game of gold. Carefully replace it and go on your way.
