Butterfly’s Hat Letterbox

To know Butterfly is to love her. She is a true inspiration to all who meet her.
Some of us have learned that she sometimes leaves things behind while letterboxing. ToadDog found her hat while we were boxing in Barkhamsted for the 100th Anniversary of CT State Forests Celebration. It was a Kodak moment!!

This box honors a much loved dog named Toad Dog . He was well known in the letterboxing world as one who saved a floating letterbox by swimming out and retrieving it . Even more amazing , he found a well worn straw hat that butterfly had lost in the Peoples State Forest , and wore it out of the woods like the champion he was.

His family , Sunshine and Swampyankee, put this box out years ago in Rocky Neck and now , Toad Dog has left that park to swim and hunt in a Forest and pond.

He is resting on the trail with a dark blue blaze and yellow stripe . The Forest is Cockaponset and the pond is Russell Jennings Pond . just off Cedar Lake Road in Chester .

Several choices to park , and then walk back on the park road to the trail , a Dark blue blaze with yellow stripe as it heads into the dam spillway . Climb up the right side on the dirt trail past the dam and enter the woods on a well worn path close to the pond edge. You will walk almost half way around the pond , on this trail , up and down , rocky footing for a short distance ,then the trail becomes easier to travel .. Many short paths take you down to the water’s edge , enjoy the walk . When you start to notice pine trees here and there , begin to search off trail on the right for a medium size boulder that might look like two mountain tops , or a two hump camel’s back ~ depends on your imagination !! You can see it from the trail , it is about 50 feet or so off trail on the right .

Toad dog wearing butterfly’s hat is resting in a little cave under that rock . Please cover it well , he is very precious to many of us .

You can continue for a longer hike , around the pond , and come to a bridge and cross it , then using your map go either on red , or blue , back to the large parking lot . Be ready to cross streams . , or return the way you came . . Enjoy the Forest and wear orange in hunting season .
