The heron lives in the Wollochet Estuary in Gig Harbor.

From I-5 in Tacoma, take Highway 16 towards Bremerton. After crossing the Narrows Bridge, take exit 10 Olympic Drive in Gig Harbor. Take a left at the exit, crossing over the highway, following the signs for Fox Island. Continue straight through lights at Pt. Fosdick and then 38th Ave. NW. At the "T" intersection light, turn left onto Wollochet Dr. NW. Continue straight through the light at East Bay Drive. There is a "blink and you'll miss it" one car parking spot on the left, just before the light at Artondale Dr. and the Gig Harbor Grange.

Start your walk from this parking spot where the sign says "Protected by Great Peninsula Conservancy". Continue straight on the overgrown path until it opens up and comes to a "Y". Go right and continue on until the path seems to run out next to a multi-trunked mossy tree. Go left along the water's edge, away from the road. Continue along the water until you get to a stone asking you to remember Michael Huber. Look due east and you'll see a huge cedar. The Wollochet heron nests at its base on the SE side of the tree.

Please make sure to reclose the container tightly and rehide it well. Please drop me a note if the box needs maintenance.

* A note on the Wollochet Estuary if you are interested: Pierce County bought 35 acres of Wollochet Estuary land in 1999 as part of a permanent conservation project. The land must be managed in a way that preserves the natural state of the wetlands and tidelands, so only passive activities, such as education walks and nature watching, is allowed here. The Wollochet Estuary is located between 2 salmon-bearing creeks and links 4 distinct habitat types: mud flats, saltmarsh, forested wetlands and forested uplands.
Hope you enjoyed your visit!
