MISSING 8/06- to be replaced by year end

General Description:
This is a quick find near a cemetery. Will you hear the tic-toc of time passing you by when you see the gravestones? Or will you find something else?

Directions:
Go to Old Doctor's Road off of Route 12 in Buxton. It is an unmarked sand road about 0.6 miles south of the Hatteras School - "Home of the Hurricanes." The school is at milepost 63.0. You'll see the sign "Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve" where you need to park.

Time:
Quick - drive-by.

Information:
Buxton Woods is the largest remaining maritime forest in the southeast. It consists of pine and oak covered dune ridges interspersed with maritime swamp forest and unique marshy wetlands. It's a very rare ecosystem for a barrier island and consists of 968 acres used for research, education and recreation.

On a walk here you might see one of 360 bird species including bald eagles and peregrine falcons, plus gray fox, white tailed deer, mink, rover otter, box tutrles, salamanders and letterboxes!

Clues:
As you start walking down the sand road you will immediately see the cemetery on your left. Go in to the gate of the cemtery and find the grave of "Edw'd S. Midgette, Co. I, N.C. Inf." From this grave stone take 9 steps west. Now take 7 steps south. You'll find the letterbox under some bark/stumps. Please cover it well as there are often visitors to this area. Maybe even burrow it a bit.
