RAIL TRAIL SERIES [3 boxes] (Round trip about 1 mile of easy walking-Will need a compass-NO ink pads in boxes) Boxes have been replaced. New Clues.

These letterboxes are located along the old Montrose RR which at one time connected Montrose to New Milford and Alfred. Later, the Lackawanna and Montrose RR was taken over by the D.L. & W. RR and connected montrose to the big cities. Now, the railroad beds are used for horse back riding, walkers, snowmobile-ers, snowshoe-ers, and cross country skiers.

TO FIND THE STARTING LETTERBOX 1 (BEGINNING)

Start at the only traffic light in Montrose. Follow PA 29N, PA 706E, and PA 167S. At the Valero gas station on the right, pull BEHIND the Pump & Pantry near the woods. With your back to the Pump & Pantry , go left ignoring driveways going up the hill and walk parrallel with the fence on your let. This will connect you to the railroad bed and bear to the right. During your walk, a big white building with many gables and 4 cupolas will be on the left; this building is the Susquehanna County SPCA building. On the right, you sill soon see a white pillar reaching for the sky (YM37). Eight PACES (remember, every left foot) past the pillar, take the right between 2 piles of rocks or 2 triple trunked trees (if you see a tree with 2 stumps on the left on the rr bed, you have gone too far) and go up to the next level and continue in the same direction. (You will have to go over a few fallen trees [to discourage snowmobiles.]) When you see a pond down to the left, start to look for a tree on the same side with 2 white horizontal stripes. With your back to the tree, face 246 degrees (across the path) to the rock with a roof in the bank. UNDER THIS ROCK YOU WILL FIND THE ENGINE.

LETTERBOX 2 (ON THE ROAD)

After replacing (1), continue in the same direction again crossing over downed trees. Take a short trail to the right around the picker bushes(earlier searchers complained about) past bamboo. Ignore first trail down to the lower level on the left. At the next intersection (white mark on double trunked tree on the left) STOP. 170 degrees from the tree, find a triple trunked tree with one trunk sawed off, an GO BEHIND IT AND YOU WILL FIND TRACKS.

LETTERBOX 3 (END)

After replacing (2), return to the railroad bed and travel 290 degrees following the bed on which you traveled back towards the picker bushes. At the bamboo (BEFORE picker bushes) take the right trail DOWN (stone wall on the left) to the lower bed and turn LEFT. Continue on the bed looking on the left for the numbers 1905-2005 where you can sit and watch the golfers. Turn around and face the bank and go to the double trunked tree located 184 degrees from where you were standing. Around there you will find the CABOOSE.

After replacing (3), return to the railroad bed, and continue looking to the right at the grounds of our Montrose Country Club golf course, Montrose Area High School on the far hill, and the beautiful Montrose Lake; passing on the left, you will see both the trail up to the upper level and the white pillar. Return to you transportation behind the Pump & Pantry and get a quick snack there, or get something more at the Stables Restaurant which is on the right heading towards the traffic light. YOu can also continue to the traffic light and check out our local craft, furniture, and antique shopS in the center of town. GOOD LUCK! ALL ABOARD!

You can continue south on Route 29 and search for SUSKY #1 Letterbox (which has not been stolen yet).
