HISTORY OF MINNEHAHA In 1882 Edgar J. Webber bought 1,700 acres near Hillyard and built himself a house, dance pavilion and tennis courts. He called it Minnehaha Springs and Health Resort. Minnehaha means waterfall in the Sioux language. He even built a street car to bring in customers. But the business failed and the land was used by various businesses. It was finally sold to the City of Spokane as a park for 35,000 dollars.
In 1917 the Hollywood actor, Tyrone Power Sr. persuaded the citizens of Spokane to invest thousands of dollars in his new Washington Motion Picture Company located at Minnehaha . The new studio was built around the dance hall and production of the movie Fools Gold began in 1918 . The movie was a failure.
The movie studio was rented out to several movie companies, until it was sold to actor Wellington Playter. He used it as an acting school and movie studio.
In 1922 Nell Shipman the Canadian actress, writer, director and animal activist came to town to make the movie The Grubb Stake . She and her production company, Nell Shipman Productions, arrived with her menagerie of wild animals. The Grubb Stake was set in Alaska and movie sets including a set of an Alaskan theater , were constructed at Platyer’s Studio. (An entire false front town was built at the Bowl and Pitcher in Riverside State Park). She sold stock in the movie to Spokane business men but Nell’s production company began to run out of money before they could finished filming. So, the movie had to be finished at Nell’s Priest Lake camp called Lion Head Lodge (now named Shipman’s Point). This was the last movie to be shot at Minnehaha.
