***BOX IS BACK IN ACTION. NEW STAMP, NEW LOGBOOK.*****

Shelter Gardens
Walking through the stone and wrought-iron gates of Shelter Gardens is like stepping into a veritable paradise...over 300 varieties of trees and shrubs, and 15,000 annuals and perennials await your pleasure, in addition to footpaths throughout the Gardens, a one-room schoolhouse, a gazebo, and expansive stretches of lush lawn, which are free to use to roam, picnic, and enjoy.

If you visit on a Sunday evening in the summer, amidst the sounds of running water you’ll likely hear the strains of music performed by mid-Missourians...sit down, relax, and revel in the concert. If your visit coincides with cooler weather, the sounds of running water and melody will give way to the luxury of quiet contemplation. Whatever the season, you’ll be sure to enjoy your time spent at Shelter Gardens.

This is an exquisitely-maintained, award winning, privately-owned Garden open to the public. Permission for placing this letterbox was granted by the superintendent of grounds; groundskeepers and security personnel have been notified of its existence and location. However, please be discreet in your letterboxing activities as the location is in an area not usually frequented by Garden guests; we don’t want to draw attention to our presence there. This will be more important in the winter, when foliage will not hide you as well from other guests as it will in the summer. Be sure to re-hide the box carefully to prevent a casual passer-by from noticing it. This is a BYOI (bring your own ink) LB.

Directions
Take Exit #124 (Stadium Blvd) off I-70 in Columbia. Head south about 1 mile and turn left onto Broadway. The Shelter Insurance headquarters will be the first building on the left, with the large water fountain in front. Turn in to the first driveway on the left of the building and go straight back, through the parking lot. The Shelter Gardens will be on your left once you get through the parking lot.

Clues
Enter the Gardens at the main gate. Take your time and enjoy the scenery as you meander around. Eventually you’ll come across the Vietnam memorial; have a seat on the bench facing the back of the Gardens. Look to the left of the rock water feature (may or may not actually have water in it, depending on the season) and you’ll notice a small path leading behind it. Take this path (as nonchalantly as possible) to a fence and follow it west to a gate. With your back to the gate, head 20 degrees to a large tree. Look left and down at big triangular stone and go left 1 stone(the bottom layer) and here you’ll find your prize.

Note
There is no room for privacy in this back area; it might be a good idea to move away and sit down on the grass, or back on the bench, while perusing your prize. Please be sure to arrange the rocks carefully when re-hiding, so as not to leave anything showing. Feel free to drop me a line to let me know how the box is faring!
