Police Log: PL720

Date: October 31st, 2005

Place: Winslow State Park - Mt. Kearsage - Wilmot, NH

Report: A call was placed around 9:30pm, by a Mr. Joe Sullivan, stating that on his way home from work, he had noticed a light coming from Mt. Kearsage. Being a local, he drives by an area of Route 4 that is quite visable of the mountain during the day. So not being able to see the mountain at night, he felt that something must be wrong.
Seconds after we got off the phone, Officer Jacob Talley was sent out to check things out. Taking Kearsage Valley Road, then turning left onto Kearsage Mtn Road. The officer would report that there indeed was light coming from the mountain. This was to be strange because the mountian had been closed for the season since October 30th. The first thought was that someone had gotten standed and had started a fire, but the light wasn't fire like. It was different.
It's now 10:30pm and after traveling all the way to the top, the officer had to stop at the gate. Being the time of night it was, he had no access to a key to open the gate. So he walked up to the parking lot with his flashlight. Looked around a bit there, and proceeded to the trail that would head to the summit of the mountian. There were 2 trails, and the light was coming from the Winslow Trail on the right.
Officer Talley headed up the trail with caution. There were lots of rocks and roots sticking out of the ground. And if that wasn't enough, it had snowed days before. It made for a tricky trek. But none the less, he carried on.
Soon he got to some power lines and the light grew stronger. Officer Talley draws his pistol, points it in the direction of the light and proceeds. Passing a tree with a faint red marker and standing at a second marked tree, he pauses.
****"Umm, sir this is really wierd!" he radioed back to the station
There was no responce back from the station. Just some static. So he started slowly towards the light climbing the rocks and roots about 21 paces past the second red marker, pistol still drawn. He would call out to see if anyone was there, but no one responded. He turns right and is looking at a 3 trunked tree that it glowing the brightest light he had ever seen. This tree was in bad shape, all broken. Officer Talley calls out, "FREEZE OR I'LL SHOOT!" There was no responce, when he fired his gun and the light went out. Holding his flashlight tightly in one hand and the pistol in the other, he heads for the tree. Slowly makes his way behind the badly busted tree and bends over. He places his hand on the ground to find............
But no sooner did he place his hand on the ground, he looks to his right and found that the light was coming back. This time is was behind a tree just a bit further up the embankment. A stump, a smaller stump, and the tree with the light. "FREEZE!" he yelled again.
Out from the light came a ghost. Now this scared the, well ummm, well, lets just say he will need to change when he gets back to the station. It turns out, it was the ghost of the late Katherine Raynore (1875 - 1931). She was an actress from New York, who once owned and loved the mountain. She had claimed that she couldn't sleep and desided to go for a walk. She didn't mean to cause a scene. Officer Talley had questioned her about why no one had ever seen her before, and she claimed to sleep at night to not draw visitors such as the officer. The officer thought that was a good idea and left it at that. They said thier good nights and she headed back to tree of which Officer Talley had seen her at and she stood behind that the tree and slowly dissappeared into the ground..........
Officer Talley headed back to the station and tried to explain what had happened up on the mountian, but the other officers just laughed and asked where that smell was coming from.
