HE SAID...SHE SAID #

A short and easy walk.
Hand-carved Stamp

First-finder Certificate

This inventor-statesman hailed from Missouri and entertained a nation with his writing! He had a gift for seeing and commenting on the obvious and the innate qualities of human nature--often with humor. The Kansas City Star’s obituary for this man quoted comments he made about himself following the death of his daughter: "I suppose we are all poets when we are under the stress of deep feeling and that when the stress comes often we devote ourselves to poetry instead of prose....I am condemned to prose. Still I am satisfied, for I was born indolent, and even the indolent can dig prose and get recreation and entertainment out of it." He also said, "Always do right. This will gratify some and astonish the rest."

This box is the third in a series of four boxes. It is hidden at the Prairie Park Nature Center. It is accessible even when the Nature Center is closed. The Center website: http://parks-recreation.ci.lawrence.ks.us/ppnc/index.html "Forest Wonder" and "Making Tracks West" are also hidden in this park..

To reach Prairie Park Nature Center at 2730 SW Harper:

--In Lawrence, get on K-10 / 23rd Street

--From K-10 / 23rd Street, turn south on Haskell.

--From Haskell, turn east/left on 27 Street.

--From 27 Street, turn south/right on Harper.

--Enter the parking lot on the west side of the Center and park in the south lot.

--Walk south from the parking lot to the beginning of the trail.

--At the "T", turn left/east (meadowlark sign). Continue on this path until you come to the "At Edges" sign--there you will see that the pavement ends but a dirt path heads off to the left, into the meadow.

--Follow the dirt trail around the edge of the meadow until you come to a raised wooden bridge off to your right. Take this turn and cross the bridge

--Take the "Y" to the right, stepping over two concrete squares, and then take 15 (small) paces down the path.

--On the left/south side of the path look for two trees which are slightly intertwined. You will find the letterbox tucked into the backside of the trees.

Be sure to wedge the box tightly into the trees and cover the box with twigs when you are done.

A report on the status of the box is always appreciated!
