Garfield Park is located in Grand Rapids, MI, off Burton Street between Jefferson and Madison. Go to the northwest entrance of the park (corner of Burton and Jefferson) and begin in the parking area.

Clues:
An Ode to the Giants of Garfield

So long before we walked the ways of this park
The tree giants did on their long lives embark.
And as we do roam and go on with our ways
We look and we wonder about former days.

Go east toward the lodge, and you will see the stone;
Buried Charles and Jessie did set this park’s tone.
Move southward—a great craggy giant you’ll see—
To where a young child might bat off a tee.

Then 215 degrees, to the hills.
Take a seat near some giants, if fatigue your group fills.
Walk southward; then follow a rough piney way,
To the serpent-like giant, in whose branches you play.

Look up and ahead where you’ll cross asphalt way;
Go on to the forest where more giants lay.
Here in a protected and shaded abode,
Please enter now softly where many have strode.

The path to the right of five welcoming ones
Will lead you right on to more letterbox fun!
Go on at 240 when the paths are next split.
Follow this path through the “tunnel” for a bit.

Keep keen eyes about till you see the “keyhole,”
Pass on, though, this giant will not more extol.
Keep walking, a large fallen “Y” you will see
Where you’ll turn into the trees and march in (140).

Keep moving on here, where many giants lie “dead,”
Their long years of life marked by others instead.
Keep your eyes open wide till you walk in between
The giant “claw” tree and a stump, tall and lean.

Walk carefully then, balancing on long one
On more to the path, where a rest might be fun.
You’ll have to share, though, as the bench is not long,
But time is well-spent with some friends and bird songs.

Go east on the path till a large fence is seen
Then look by the one that is golden and green.
This remnant of giant protects what you seek
Look carefully ‘round and you’ll soon get a peek--

A letterbox honoring these giants of old
Which you will now find, for their story’s been told!
