The Garden Island has so many wonderful sights and things to do! If you want to get both of these boxes in one day, you can plan the day to include an amazing garden tour and nine holes of golf, or spend only gas money, tour the free gardens and take a run or walk with tropical ocean views. You can do the boxes in either order, but will have to spend a little time brushing up on your Hawaiian before you set out. Once you have translated the following words, insert the English translations at the appropriate numbers in the clues. The words may have more than one translation--use the translation that contains only the same number of words. You may contact me if you want to make sure you are correct before you set out. Where there is a capitalized vowel, it means that letter is the Hawaiian vowel that has a line over it, which you will want to be specific with when attempting to translate.

1. pA pOhaku

2. alanui

3. hAkala

4. hale'Apulu

5. ma'oma'o

6. kia (the one that is an animal)

7. kuli

8. kai

9. pAma

10. pou kelepona

11. lua huna

12. pOhaku

13. hakualo

Both boxes will require you to be standing on the -2- side of a -1-, and you will draw a line between the specified landmarks to where it intersects with the -1-. PLEASE be very discreet and re-hide well; I won't be around to check these boxes. Take your camera with you so you can act like crazy tourist taking pictures of things near where you are searching.

Box 1 -- Wedding Moon

Kukio-o-lono Park and Golf Course
Go one mile south on Papalina Road from Hwy 50 at Kalaheo (turnoff is just east of 12 mile marker). Look to the right for gateway--we couldn't see the name of the road. Gate hours are 7 am to 6:30 pm daily. Many locals and visitors get their exercise by jogging the trails here. The views are idyllic! Watch out for golf balls! The course is a nice little nine-hole public course. We rented two sets of clubs, a cart, and played one round for the total expenditure of $37.50. To get the box:

Drive in and park near the plaque. Stand on the -2- side of the -1-. Draw an imaginary line from the right -3- of the -4- that is -5- through the ears of the -6- to where it would intersect the -1-. At the height of your -7- behind three small -12-s. Try to pinpoint your location before you start moving -12-s so as not to take the -1- apart!

Box 2 -- Breadfruit

To get to the National Tropical Botanical Garden: From Hwy 50 take the Koloa Road to Po'ipu Road and turn right. When the road forks near the ocean, turn right onto Lawa'i Road to the end. You will see the entrance to the gardens on your right just before Spouting Horn. If you are there during business hours (8:30 am - 5 pm), pull into the parking area and tour the gardens near the visitor center. These are free and beautiful. If you want more, you can take a tour of McBryde Gardens. We did this, and it was great, but if we'd had more time, we would have toured Allerton Gardens, a real tropical paradise, and a gift of a true ecology visionary, who saw even in the early part of the 1900s that tropical plants were being destroyed around the world and set up his home as a preserve for them. You can walk back out to the -2- to get the box, or, if you get here after hours (as I did when planting), you can park at Spouting Horn, or by the vacant lot on the -8- side across from the gardens. To get the box:

Stand on the -2- side of the -1- between the driveways. Draw an imaginary line from the -9- closest to the -10- to the trio of -9-s at 4452. At about the height of your -13-, in its own little -11- under a -12- too large to lift, behind one easily removed and replaced is your treasure.

Enjoy these boxes and your visit to the Garden Island, and let me know how your search went.
