If there is a more beautiful waterfall in the state of California than Burney Falls in Plumas County (up in the NE sector of this big state of ours), we'd like to know about it. In the fall of the year, this area is probably most colorful you'll find in California. At other times of the year, the evergreens will knock you out as well. The roads are very well maintained and there are wonderful hiking trails for all fitness levels.

About the Dave Box:

Dave is a Judge in our area and a heck of a nice guy. A down-to-earth, generous, happy guy with a wife who's one of my favorite people. We thought his image would make a great stamp. If you are curious about what Dave looks like or, if you want to see what our idea of a spectacular waterfull looks like, get yourself to this box.

Clues:

Make your way to Burney Falls east of I-5 on Route 89 out of Shasta, CA. Walk yourself down the trail to the falls and use up your camera's film getting every angle of it. Take the paved path and cross over the rainbow bridge (the shape, not the color) and contiune in the direction of the PSEA Camp Britton.

Walk along, enjoying the river, the array of spectacular Ponderossa Pines, Doug Fir, and the pockets of soft, white, powdery talc along the sides of the trail (we didn't know there was talc in California!) about 1/2 mile or so.

When you get to a huge fallen tree that juts out over the river, and that has become part of the path itself, you have arrived at the spot you seek. At its base is a slightly-bigger-than-a-bread-box-sized boulder. Under this boulder on the trail side and behind another rock is your prize.

Rather than retracing your steps back up the trail, please continue on this trail, through Camp Britton, up the dirt road and back through where the Pacific Crest Trail takes you back to the top of the falls. It's about a 2.5 mile hike all told but it's mostly level and very scenic.

Also, don't miss the other LB that's in this park!
