7/25/06 Yes, Little Owl is missing. I still plan to re-plant, but for now enjoy Little Squirrel.

These boxes were placed for my friend Charlie, who lives in the area, and is the second youngest letterboxer I know. There are a couple other boxes in this park, which is a great place to have a picnic, run the dog, use the playground.

On Mercer Island, take Island Crest to a T at 84th Ave. SE. Turn left and go to the north parking lot of Luther Burbank Park.

Box #1: From the paved trail at the north end of the parking lot, find the place where all the world's a stage. Behind and to the right, heading north, is a path. Follow it, to see where it goes. When you get to the place that you should not enter, stop and turn around. From the first (last) fencepost, walk back the way you came 32 paces. To the west will be a three-fingered maple, to the east, a huge poplar. On the back side of this tree, tucked into a root and covered by a stone, is a little owl.

Box #2: Go back to the first paved path you took and follow it east towards the water. When you reach a place to park your two-wheeler, turn and proceed towards and past the blue pipe structures. You can detour down to the soaring bricks, hands holding chains, and steel umbrella, if you wish, for possible added treasure. When you're ready to continue, come back to this spot on the red path standing in the line made by the soaring fir tree on your right and the soaring bricks off to your left. South from here is a big boulder with a lone bench just beyond. As you pass these landmarks, you could stop for a picnic if you like, but if you're not hungry, take the red path inland and turn north at the white sentinel. Just past its twin, turn into the garden, have a seat, and contemplate the habitat. Maybe one of the residents lives tucked under the rock before you. Please make sure this little squirrel is tucked well back in his cozy den and out of sight before you leave him.

Have fun!
