Placed and carved by Koyote.
Moderate hike with an extremely rewarding view. Allow for an hour or so for this box.

** New signs placed May 2006. Should still be able to figure out location. Box found since new signs placed. I will update as soon as I can.**

John S. Mosby, Known as the "Grey Ghost", was a Confederate Ranger during the Civil War. His raids on Union supply lines wreaked havoc among northern forces. Huge amounts of Union troops were charged with finding and eliminating this deadly force. Mosby and his men were extremely elusive and constantly slipped away into the Virginia countryside. For this elusiveness, he was known as "The Grey Ghost". The area in which this box is placed was Mosby's main area of control and he hid in these hills frequently.

DIRECTIONS: From Leesburg, Va. take Rt.7 west towards Purcellville. Continue on Rt. 7 past Purcellville and into Bluemont. Look for Rt. 679/Pine Grove Rd. on the right. Take a U-turn at this point heading East on Rt. 7. You will see a pull off into a commuter lot just up the road on the right. Park in here.

CLUES: From the parking lot, walk back down Rt.7 staying on the inside of the guardrail for safety. You will come to a little driveway-like entrance which you will pass and continue on to another one which is the one you want. You will see white blazes indicating that you are on the Appalachian Trail. Follow this trail until you come to Bear's Den Rocks. This should take you about a 1/2 hour. The trails is a moderate climb and very rocky. Pay attention to your footing. Thr trail is well blazed the whole way. Upon arriving at Bear's Den Rock's you will notice a sign in a tree about 10 ft. above the trail. The arrow/sign reads: "Bear's Den Trail Center Hiker Services .1 mile". From this tree take a reading of 330 deg.and walk 17 steps down the slope. You should almost come to a ledge. A small pine stump was at this point at the time of this writing. Now take a bearing of 30 degrees. take 25 steps in this direction, walking along a rock ledge/path. You will come to a large boulder formation just to your right. It's abount 3 ft. high or so. To the bottom right side as you face this boulder lies the "Grey Ghost", hiding from the union cavalry patrols. stamp in while enjoying the view from Bear's Den Rocks. Please rehide this box carefully after resealing the contents TIGHTLY. Hope you enjoy.
