The Henry Morgenthau Preserve is a 35-acre preserve along the shores of Blue Heron Lake in Pound Ridge.

Directions: From I-684, take Exit 4 and go east on Route 172 to Bedford Village. After reaching the village, go another 2.4 miles. The preserve is on the right a little past the intersection of Tatomuck Road on the left. Be careful! The sign for the preserve is small as is the entrance to the parking lot, and it is quite easy to miss. Look for a green box with a large "M" inside. If you get to Buck Horn Street, you've gone too far. There is a mirror in the road outside the entrance, but it is sometimes obscured by underbrush.

After parking your car, enter the preserve on the right through the gap in the stone wall. After the welcome kiosk, take the blue trail. Pass through a gap in a stone wall and continue on the trail. Walk on the elevated planks, then pass through another gap in a stone wall on the right. Immediately, the trail forks - take the right fork. Go a very short distance and make a right on the yellow trail.Walk on another elevated plank path. At the end of the planks, walk through a gap in a wall on the right.

Continue on the yellow trail; it will bend left, then turn right. Go through a gap in another stone wall. You will see a sign ahead that says, "End of Preserve." To your left, you will see a large “wolf tree”, a magnificent white oak thought to be the second oldest oak in Westchester after the Bedford Oak. After admiring the tree, turn back to face the gap in the wall that you just came through. The letterbox is about 10 steps along the left wall, about 3 feet to the right of a tree growing in the wall, under some rocks in the lower part of the wall.

You can then trace your steps back, or follow the blue trail for a lovely walk along Heron Lake.
