The term NIMROD means great hunter, although its use by Warner Bros for Elmer Fudd, had made it take on a slightly different meaning. This series has been placed near Kernville as thanks to a letterbox "hunter" that has placed so many in Southern California for others. This series begins at the Fairview Parking area just north of Fairview Campground and McNally's Restaurant about 15 miles north of Kernville off Sierra Hwy (mtn Hwy 99). This series sends you on a two and a half mile (feels more like 5 miles) hike to the Packsaddle Cave. Although it is rated a moderate hike, we found it to be quite tough, almost completely uphill and downhill, with sections that seemed quite steep. But the cave at the end was worth the killer hike. Bring plenty of water (stream water must be treated – we headed out before sunrise and avoided the heat of the day and bugs). Also bring flashlights to explore the cave. This series will not be maintained, so please properly rehide and secure the boxes, so they will last for others. Thank you.

Box 1:
From the parking lot, cross the highway, and start UP the Packsaddle Cave Trail. A short ways up the dirt road, the trail will split off to the right. Follow the trail along and under power lines until they turn to the left. From the base of the northern support wires of the corner pole go 15 steps at 140 degrees (uphill) to a large rock (go around bushes). The box is under smaller rocks. GOOD SHOT, but we are after bigger game.

Box 2:
Continue following the trail up and around the mountain, past the 1st ravine, past the second ravine, then 32 steps past the 3rd ravine you will come to a large, flat, level rock on the left side of the trail. The box is located at the back under the large rock, protected by smaller rocks. BE VERY CAREFULL retrieving this box, ground is very steep and rocks are loose. GREAT SHOT, but we are after the elusive Bugs Bunny.

Box 3:
Continue up and over the saddle (pass), and to the right where the trail begins a gradual downhill. We were fortunate to see a deer on the mountain across to the left of trail, when we planted the series. As you continue around the mountain you will begin your decent down to the creek. After passing a couple ravines, the large/deep second ravine dips down, and as you cross, there will be a burned scrub oak 6 steps ahead on right side of trail. The box is in the burned out stump/roots under many rocks – please rehide well. THAT WAS CLOSE, now you are just shooting at anything that moves.

Now is the time to decide if you want to turn back, or go all the way to the cave, before the steep decline down to the creek

Box 4:
Continue with the steeper decent to the creek (water must be treated to drink – see links at end of clues). Cross over the creek and follow the creek upstream on the almost non-existent trail (signs were very scarce attached to trees). The trail goes up on the left, but jumps back and forth across creek. Eventually there will be another creek bed off to the left (was dry when I planted series), and the trail will reappear as you go up that creek bed. You should soon be able to see the cave opening up the hill side on your left, but continue past it on the trail up the creek bed until you get to the trail sign. And head back uphill to the left toward cave (sign to cave was missing). The box is located 8-10 steps left of the entrance without going off edge or uphill (at 200 degrees from cave entrance). The box is under many rocks at about 3 feet up and 3 feet right of the dead bush. WELL DONE – you are truly the Great Hunter.
