UPDATE!! AS OF AUGUST 12, 2011 WE REGRET TO REPORT THAT THIS LETTERBOX IS OFFICIALLY MISSING AGAIN. DUE TO THE GREAT NUMBER OF MILES BETWEEN US AND THIS BOX, IT MAY BE SOME TIME BEFORE THE BOX CAN BE REPLACED. WE WILL UPDATE THIS PAGE WHEN WE ARE ABLE TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION.

PLEASE NOTE: THE LOCATION OF THIS BOX HAS RECENTLY CHANGED. DUE TO INCREASED MUGGLE TRAFFIC IN IT'S ORIGINAL LOCATION, AND HAVING THE BOX COME UP MISSING, WE'VE DECIDED TO HIDE THIS BOX IN A LOCATION NOT FAR FROM THE ORIGINAL. ALTHOUGH IT'S NEW LOCATION DOES NOT GIVE THE FINDER A FULL VIEW OF THE PANORAMIC SPLENDOR FROM MT. HELIX WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO CLIMB THE AMPITHEATER STAIRS TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE VIEW MT. HELIX HAS TO OFFER. AND IF YOU COME ON A CLEAR DAY YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SEE ALL THE WAY TO THE OCEAN!

Named after a snail in the area (the Helix Aspersa), and known for it’s magnificent 35-foot tall white cross, Mount Helix is a historic landmark in San Diego’s East County. Built as a memorial for Mary Carpenter Yawkey in 1925 to commemorate her life and love of the 1370-foot high mountain, Mount Helix Park continues to bring enjoyment to thousands of visitors with it’s huge outdoor amphitheater and panoramic views. For more information about this site, visit http://www.mthelixpark.org/history.htm.

It is to be noted that there is currently very limited parking at the top of the mountain. Parking is not permitted on roadways, but only in the small parking lot at the south entrance to the amphitheater. Park gates are open every day for general visiting from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset.

Get on Interstate 8 East heading towards La Mesa, after you pass the route 125 exit, take the Fuerte/Severin exit. Go to the top of the ramp in the right hand lane to the stoplight. Go through the stoplight almost straight (angles a little to the right, but not hard right), onto Fuerte Drive.

2. Continue on Fuerte Drive, you go one short block - the Brigantine Restaurant will be on your left - and you will come to a 4-way stop. Continue on Fuerte straight through the 4-way stop intersection, and go about 1/2 mile until you come to Mt. Helix Drive on your right (immediately after Lemon Ave).

3. Turn Right on Mt. Helix Drive and go one long block,
at the next intersection (with Vivera Drive) turn right. That puts you on the one-way up portion of Mt. Helix Drive (the down road from the Park is also Mt. Helix Drive but one-way going down). Continue up Mt. Helix Drive, going under the cross-over bridge, this will take you to the entry gate for Mt. Helix Park.

From the right edge of the parking lot, walk approximately 8 paces to a picnic table in a shady spot behind the new Mt. Helix history board. Take some time to read about the history of this beautiful place. Just beyond the picnic table is a small "weeping" tree with green bark and yellow blossoms (depending on the time of year). Watch for thorns as you pass under the weeping branches. Between this tree and the street is a rocky outcropping. Under the smaller rock and next to another tree trunk is your prize. Be sure to replace pine needles/leaves and hide well. Park is heavily traveled so please be discreet.

PLEASE CONTACT ME BY EMAIL IF BOX NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED OR IS MISSING! Thank You
