This is the first set of clues for the entire Chinese Zodiac Series by Safari Man. This series was originally locate in the Columbus Metro Parks but was relocated on April 26, 2006. The clues were kept arranged in the grouping they were in previously so that previous finders could still maintain their find counts and if not finished with the series can pick up where they left off before.
LOCATION OF THE SERIES: The entire 12 box series is now located in Lake Hope State Park, which is located about 4 miles north of Zaleski Oh. or south west of Nelsonville Ohio about 18 miles on Ohio route 278. For a map of the park go to:

The Chinese animal signs are a 12-year cycle used for dating the years. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and is constructed in a different fashion than the Western solar calendar. The Chinese have adopted the Western calendar since 1911, but the lunar calendar is still used for festive occasions such as the Chinese New Year. A popular folk method which reflected this cyclical method of recording years are the Twelve Animal Signs. Every year is assigned an animal name or "sign" according to a repeating cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar. Therefore, every twelve years the same animal name or "sign" would reappear.
A cultural sidelight of the animal signs in Chinese folklore is that horoscopes have developed around the animal signs, much like monthly horoscopes in the West have been developed for the different moon signs, Pisces, Aries, etc. For example, a Chinese horoscope may predict that a person born in the Year of the Horse would be, "cheerful, popular, and loves to compliment others". These horoscopes are amusing, but not regarded seriously by the Chinese people. For more information on the Chinese Zodiac go to:

Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: fairly flat and about 1/2 mile for the first four boxes.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands. Bug repellant might come in handy during the summer months.
There may be other hikers on the trails so check the trail in both directions before retrieving and replacing the boxes. Also, please double bag the log book and reseal all the zippers of the baggies securely to prevent the log book from becoming wet.
To get started on this hunt, following my directions, find one of the Main entrances to the Lake Hope State Park at the south end of the park on Ohio 278. This is the entrance where the sign lists: Beach, Boat Rental, Picnic, Keeton Cemetery and Cabins 1-66. Enter the park here and follow the signs to the Beach but pass the Beach and boat rental exit and continue to the end of the main road to the turn around circle. Note the "No Parking at any time" sign at the end of the circle as you will start your hike here. Now go back to the parking area a short ways back on the lake side of the road.
BOAR: From the "No Parking" sign walk 50 steps into the woods on an unnamed trail and stop 3 steps before the iron pipe. Take a heading of ~ (approximately) 185* and go 12 steps to a large pine and find the BOAR behind the pine under sticks and pine needles.
SHEEP:Go back to the iron pipe and walk as you were going for 60 steps and look left behind a large standing pine at the intersection of one fallen tree lying on another and a broken fallen tree. This intersection of fallen trees is about 5 steps off the trail and the SHEEP is hidden under your end of the closest of the two touching trees.
At this point we continued forward and lost sight of this trail under leaves.....or it just disappeared....so back to the turn around circle you go. Heading back toward your car look down toward the lake at the building closest to the turn around. Do you see the trail sign with several choices on it. Go to that trail sign to begin your next short hike on the Hope Furnace trail.
HORSE Follow the Hope Furnace lake trail to the third tree on the left before the second wooden foot bridge (~ 9 steps before this second bridge). The Horse is behind this tree under pine needles and sticks.
DRAGON 9NOTE: THE DRAGON IS MISSING)From this point on the path go 70 steps (14 steps before the third bridge) and look left where the standing tree touches the fallen tree. The DRAGON is between these trees where they meet.
From here you will continue forward but will have to refer to the CHINESE ZODIAC TIGER clue page. (this was done to maintain the clue pages as they were at the old location)
