I have decided to take my letterboxes located in Florida and move them further north where I can look after them a little easier. I thank all those who have visited and signed the log book.

THE HERON: MY TOTEM by: Peter Thelin

from its long still legs
the heron with awkward arching grace
lifts my dream

The Great Blue Heron is a wading bird and is common all over North America. It likes to feed in shallow water, spearing small fish with it's long sharp bill. They stand 4 ft. tall and have a 7 ft. wingspan! This box is dedicated to the majestic beauty of this large bird! Be sure to bring your camera with a telephoto lens if you have one. Binoculars would be great. This spot is such a treat :-). CLUES: Bring your own stamp pad. Located south of central Venice on US 41 (Tamiami Trail), just north of Jacaranda Blvd. Driving south on US 41 turn right onto Annex Road. It's a small road and if you miss it you will see Jacaranda Blvd. and you will have to turn and come back. You will see the Florida Highway Patrol on the left side of Annex Road and the Sarasota County Administration Center on the right side of Annex Road. Drive in and follow the road all the way back. You will pass the Venice Audubon Center on your right and you are welcome to stop in for more information on the Rookery, see photo displays, or even borrow binoculars if you forgot yours at home. Continue on the drive until you see the picnic pavillion to your right. Park to your left. Walk under the picnic pavillion and approach the shoreline. Observe the birds on the island in the center of the pond. Mosey along the pond to your left. Pass a stand of palms and the "POSITIVELY NO SWIMMING" sign to your left. From the sign count about 31 steps. Turn 90 degrees to your left and see a stand of palms and pines. Walk about 12 steps towards the center, large pine tree. Squat down and reach around the trunk of the tree. You will find the Rookery Box at it's base. The foliage is very dense, but be careful that when you return the box that it is secure from sight. You can return to the pavillion to stamp up at the picnic table. Don't forget your binoculars, camera, beverage, snack, and enjoy your time here. Spring nesting season is the best time of the year!
